The word is 'abode'

I realize in the grand scheme of things its not a huge deal, but at around 40:20 or so when Richard Gere and Odette Annable's characters meet for the first time I am almost certain she says "Welcome to our humble commode", or something to that result.

Anyways I've re-watched that part a few times to be sure and it sounds like she is saying commode every time, instead of abode, which is fair to say they were probable going for.

I am just curious how something like that gets written in the first place, let alone gets missed in editing. Also, are all actors and actresses just muppets?

P.S. I also tried seeing if commode or something that sounds like that is a synonym for abode, couldn't find it.

Did you ever stop to think maybe she was making a JOKE about their abode not being so great?

I caught that right away & had a laugh, hopefully it was meant to be an ice breaker if not then I would ask to use the abode & look for her expression,ha

You stream it, I watch it, I spread the word = BUZZ 4 Films That Need It!

reply

Why would she joke with a complete stranger? It came over as though she (and all the others in the making of the film) didn't know the correct word. But as a "funny" or "ironic" remark it fell flate.

reply

It was a lame joke, I agree, but it was a joke. Despite what some may think, I promise you the writers know the damn difference between "abode" and "commode". Grow the hell up.

Ummm, why joke with a complete stranger? So life isn't completely boring maybe?

And he's not a complete stranger, he is her husbands partner.

I guarantee you the makers of the movie know the correct word and that the makers of the movie intended the character to be telling a joke judging by how her and gere were both smiling afterwards.

reply

She jokes to put "their guest" at ease.

The word is 'flat.' The joke "fell FLAT." Do you not know the difference between flat and flate?

reply

Are you so starved for a snarky remark (or "snahky remahk" in Bahston) that you can't recognize a typo when you see it? Or if any of the rest of us commit a typo will you flate us?

reply

Since we're complete strangers, so why would you be joking, the word is flat. As for why would someone joke with someone they just met, that's how some people, certainly not you, are.

I also thought it was a pretty obvious joke.

Some people just have no sense of humor I guess. LOL

The English subtitles also say "commode." She didn't say it with a flicker of humor; I think it was a goof.

Meanwhile, on the DVD cover, I read that Marshall Fine wrote in the Huffington Post that it is "...a sleek, taught spy thriller..." which is definitely a cringe.

I took this as a genial host wanting to apologise in advance in case the house seemed like a *beep* to Gere's character - hence the toilet-themed reference.

He's done her. He's done Mrs Lop-sided.

"She didn't say it with a flicker of humor"

Um...yeah, that's called "deadpan" humor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpan)

It's a joke.

reply

It was very obviously a joke. She and Richard Gere were smiling afterwards.

commode=sh!t hole

Yes it was a joke. She laughed as she bent down and picked up a kid's scooter off the lawn.

"What happens to a dream deferred?"

reply

perhaps she thought they lived in a sewer hole and was just being kind calling it a toilet.

reply

It was a freaking joke that went over many of your heads.

Dumb people keep dissecting this move wth.

reply

Some of you just shouldn't be allowed to watch movies or post here. Four paragraphs because you didn't get a dumb joke that was meant to be a dumb joke? Really?

There's even a friggin' book by that title!

I suggest you stop watching movies, or at least stop posting about them here. Thanks.
