Gobber is not gay. Here's why

People are saying Gobber is gay because he said there was another reason why he never married...

When I watched the movie in the theatre, my initial reaction wasn't that he must be gay.. Instead it was something i thought was more logical, and funny. Something that actually is reinforced by his backstory.

He is a eunuch.

As we know he told the story of how he lost is arm and his leg. A dragon ate them. So to me it stands to reason that's not all he lost. Some dragon ate his junk.

It makes sense. It's funnier. It's only implied. He could still be gay for all we know, but at least my explanation is not completely out of the blue.

Thoughts?

reply

Your explanation certain fits! The actor who ad libbed the line was going for the gay implication, but he left it open enough that it could be interpreted more than one way. Of course, missing parts does not preclude marriage.

Haha! It does make you wonder. I think they sync up the faces to the voices after they've read the script, which allows for some variations. Some comedians always ad lib and, in this case, the director liked it and decided to keep it.

I didn't think you could ad-lib in cartoons ;-)

It happens, many of the Genie's lines in Aladdin were ad-libbed by Robin Williams. In fact, he also played the peddler in the beginning and that entire sequence was pretty much ad-libbed.

The Guru says you are wrong, therefore it is fact. Deal with it!

reply

Actually not true. In the original script, which you can buy, almost every line was contained in it already. BEFORE Robin was cast. In fact, the script notes, "A Robin Williams-type" character

reply

Ever seen All Dogs Go to Heaven? Burt and Dom ad-libbed lots of the lines.

reply

Its called motion capture.

It is very easy. they record the voices first. all you do when you ad-lib is to say something that is not in the script and it ends up in the final film

Oh GOOD!,my dog found the chainsaw

reply

The director himself said that Gobber is gay. Let it go

reply

Yes, but was he gay before Craig Ferguson added the line?

reply

Well, I don't think the creators intended Gobber to be gay, but he certainly got my gaydar going! Simply because it seems to fit his character. He's the type of guy who wouldn't care what his sexuality is.

reply

It doesn't matter if he was or wasn't before that line. Since then the director has come out and said the character is gay. It's just like J.K Rowling coming out and saying after the books were finished that Dumbledore was gay. Even though nothing about it was said in the books during the entire period it doesn't matter, he is now gay, same as Gobber. Books, movies and comics retcon stuff all the time.

reply

Firstly, I said it somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Frankly, this discussion has gotten serious all out of proportion to the movie. It was just a line. It was ad libbed. The director liked it. So, now, Gobber is gay.

reply

Haha I'm not the only one who thought of that apparently! Both the 'gay' and 'eunuch' explanations came to mind when he said the line, and I also thought it could as well be the latter since he has so many missing parts of his body.

However, Ferguson detailing what he really meant leaves it pretty much out of doubt.

reply

Some dragon ate his junk.

In that case, shouldn't the quote have been...

"And a pair of other reasons."

...?

I guess dealing with dragons is as problematic as raising chimpanzees.

All this is true, because it rhymes.

reply

When I heard that line at the theater I did not think gay. I mean, why should being gay stop someone from marrying?
I did not take the time to start guessing while at the movie but now I'm guessing he had chronic bad breath.

reply

Wow, "gay" never even crossed my mind from that line. I just automatically assumed "one other reason" was because no woman wanted to marry him.

Leave it to the internet...

reply

The director himself said that Gobber is gay. Let it go

This is the truth. The director, who also happens to be the guy who wrote the story, said Gobber is gay. I don't see what there is to discuss.

reply

The director actually said he was gay and that line indicated it as such

reply

I did not take the time to start guessing while at the movie but now I'm guessing he had chronic bad breath.
If there was a competition for the best interpretation of that line, you'd have my nomination.

reply

Agreed. The first thing that came to my mind was that he lost his ding dong when he said that line.
People who think he's gay must be gay themselves, because they want to be represented in everything. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

reply

That's an assumption... I am gay and I didn't think that. What I thought is that Gobber might be infertile, which fits with the eunuch theory.

reply

"Ding dong"???? Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

And actually, this has already been answered. It was line that was ad-libbed by the actor who meant it to imply that Gobber was gay. The director, who is gay, liked it and decided to keep it.

Why do people assume that because a man has lost his...um... part, he can't get married or wouldn't want to? There's more to marriage than sex and there's more to sex than parts.

reply

Yes but we are talking about giant buff Vikings here who have giant over inflated egos for the most part, so the not marrying because he lost the family jewels make the most sense.

reply

Too funny!

reply

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yet you keep complaining about it on multiple boards. In denial?

Even I thought that some dragon must have eaten his junk beacuse of the stories he use to tell. Then I Read Somewhere That Craig Fergusson Potrayed The Character As Gay.

His other reason is that he's smart. Then, just like today, there's no incentive for men to get married.... :)
