it made me cringe im scottish myself and her accent seems all over the place im suprised i havent seen anybody else bring this up am i the only one who thinks this way

Even the tiniest thing about these movies has already been brought up, I'd even suppose that one or two of the posters actually think that way. Everyone greatly appreciates those gems, but unfortunately, even more contentious posts push the previous ones off the front page.

Valka hadn't spoken with Vikings in 20 years. Maybe her brogue was broken. Maybe she never got it right even in Berk. Or Cate just doesn't have "Scottish" down (these characters aren't necessarily supposed to be "Scottish" anyway). She may not have even seen Shrek! Whatever, she sounds charming, and doesn't have long diatribes.

Since when have vikings been scottish aren't they from Scandinavia.

Most of the characters didn't have a Scottish accent, I don't think they were supposed to be scottish

the lead characters dads accent couldnt be more scottish if he tried and i can assure you his mothers was supposed to be as well its like one minute shes talking like shes from one part of scotland then the next another part people dont realise we have different accents the same as other countries

The dad had a Scottish accent because the actor is scottish, the main character and several other important characters had various american and Canadian accents because that's were the actors are from.

Just because Butler and one other character are scottish doesn't mean everyone has to do a Scottish accent especially since vikings are not scottish.

i never said vikings were scottish but there not american or canadian either but it didnt stop actors from using theyre real accents so if they wanted it to be authentic they should have made the actors speak in norwegian accents and i stand by what i said she attempted to do a scottish accent and it sucked

Vikings colonised many places and didn't stop being Vikings when they got there. Case in point: various parts of Scotland (particularly the islands) were once part of the Kingdom of Norway and eight Norwegian kings are buried on the (Scottish) island of Iona.

I think the creative decision was to go with Scottish accents for the adults because of Gerard and Craig and to let the children have American accents with the thinking of how immigrant children will have different accents than their parents. None of it makes a great deal of sense, it's one of those areas where continuity gets lost.

I'm just glad they don't sound anything like Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman or Karen Gillan in Doctor Who. Most of the time, they're okay, but I've had to turn on closed captioning so many times just to understand what they're saying.

I am in entire agreement with you. It beggars belief that the producers would let something like this pass - don't they check if these big-name stars can do the required accent first? Were they to scared or embarrassed to tell her "sorry love, that was 5#!7" and send her on her way? It was atrocious - almost criminal!

Really, I don't want to labour the point, but that indictable assault upon the ears pretending to be a Caledonian lilt made Dick Van Dyke's risible attempt at Cockney in "Mary Poppins" sound like Oscar-winning stuff.

I couldn't agree more and I got on here specifically to say it.
I can't believe that an actress as talented as Cate did such a shi7e job with the accent. Was she even trying?
Now, I didn't like the character much anyway but the voicing was terrible. She would have been better off just using her normal Australian accent as half the cast don't even bother using anything else but their normal voice.
