lousy dragon designs

The only dragons that look good in these movies are Toothless, the alphas, and the red death from the first one. The rest of the dragons are too silly and kiddie looking. They should have some awesome designs instead of something that looks like it came from 'the Croods'. The only silly dragons should be the babies and the ones that belong to the idiot kids (who shouldn't really exist either). There should be dragons from every culture's depiction of them: wyverns, 4-legged dragons, Chinese serpents with no wings. Lose the bright colors and ridiculous shapes!

Well start wishing for "Dragonheart" prequels made for cinema!(Not the DTV crap)Then you could hope for a team of varied dragons that don't look kiddified either!

While I do like the fact that the director did not go for the generic dragon design (ala game of thrones), I do agree that they seemed rather bland, especially in the second movie. I don't really like the design of the side-character's dragons, though they do have interesting personalities.

reply

Yeah, let's ban all the kiddy stuff from a kids movie.

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.

I didn't mind the designs, but I see where the OP is coming from. Kinda seemed like the artists just said "hey what would sell the most as a toy" with some of the designs.

I must admit I missed a few more deaths and some blood... naah, not really, maybe a little blood however it wouldn't hurt... but this is not exactly a kid's movie I'd say.

I think the dragon designs are fine, but it's actually Toothless that I think is the least well done - he's about 75% Stitch.

Yes, finally someone that see's this as well! I'm sure there's more out there but less vocal.

Game of Thrones has a very defined and dark style that contributes to their dragon designs, so to that guy that's taking a knock on them, you don't know what a dragon should look like or when styles clash.

I blame the silly designs on DreamWorks themselves. They are heavy handed with micro-managing all their properties allowing for very little creativity. Dragon could've been better(design and story) if they had not interfered with it's original direction, we did NOT and do NOT need Madagascar spin-offs and there was no market for Peabody.

Artist have no say in DreamWorks, just clueless, heartless and tasteless execs.

I'm glad they didn't go with stereotypical dragon designs, but I agree that some of them could have been better.

I love Toothless and Cloudjumper. Stoick's dragon (Skullcrusher), the Bewilderbeasts, and the Red Death are all cool.

I kind of like Snotlout's dragon, Hookfang, but I'm fairly indifferent to the other teens' dragons. Astrid's dragon, Stormfly, has an interesting personality but its design doesn't appeal to me. The twins' dragon, Barf & Belch, has the least personality of all of them and I'm neutral on the design.

reply

Agree. Most of the dragons, with the exception of a few, had rather generic designs.
