Great Movie but why

I'm guessing you mean Skylar and Nate's mom? Dick Cavanaugh hit and killed their mom when he was driving drunk and passed out behind the wheel. Bloom knew he (Dick) would never get charged and do time for killing her as he was the mayor and his family ran the town, so he filed it as an unsolved hit and run and was "paid" for his silence by becoming Chief of Police (I think that was his title).

-Dad, who's that?
-Oh, that? One of my patients. He's...sick.
-Will he live?
-It's looking grim.

To me it was worth it just for the acting of Ted Levine, one of the great actors of our time, who has, through hard work, outgrown the type-casting that almost doomed him to playing psychos after "Silence of the Lambs".
