What's the point? That the story is competently told and holds one's attention doesn't make up for the fact that it's meaninglessly dreary.

Then you didn't understand the movie at all.

It doesn't matter that this happens in Russia, anymore than "Deliverance" happens in the United States. It's a story about a guy who gets very lost in the wrong places, and through a series of (often ironic) situations, finds he has come full circle by the end of the movie, back where the whole thing started. But as a very different person.

It's hardly "meaningless"...it's got more substance and commentary to it than 20 blockbuster Hollywood movies, combined. It speaks of the human will to survive, it speaks of the damage done by trauma, it shows the human condition, human behavior, the need for contact, the quest for power...The characters range from caring & humanitarian to the scum of the earth. If you can't see that and think it's merely a glimpse into the dreary, depressing lives of desperate people for the sake of gratuitous violence or "relatively interesting style," you missed the point.

It's not about "sadomasochism," it's about desperation, and sadly, reality. Violence perpetuates violence.
