Why didn't people like this film?

It was one of the funniest movies of the year. So much better than the overrated Borat.

part of what made Borat so great was that a good number of scenes (such as interviews) were unscripted, and included candid reactions of other people. You get a look into the stereotypes that other people hold. Same with Bruno. This was just a standard, crude movie (that was very self-aware). It was funny, but not on the same level as the previous two. At least, that's what I thought of the film. I can't speak for the masses or anybody else's opinion.

I didn't like it because I thought SBC and Larry Charles were gonna try to make a film like Bruno n Borat in a similar vein of this character bringing out funny unscripted reactions in people treating SBC like an eccentric dictator, but everyone recognixed SBC after the success of B&B, so they had to make a scripted standard comedy due to sinking so much money into scenes already filmed. They should have scrapped it if SBC's popularity made the original concept unfilmable. Just a theory, mind you, but I can't see the filmmakers making a faux-mockumentary with a script in The Dictator's fashion after the success of B&B unless no one was biting because they recognized SBC.

This film wouldn’t have worked as a mocumentary. Kazakstan and Austria are real places, Wadeea is not. People would have sniffed out too easily that it was fake. How would you get international news about a fake dictator?
