THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT THEY REMADE IT

The problem is that they remade it without bringing something new to the story, they just retold the original back in it's original setting.
In film practically every story that could be done has been done, the only new thing you can bring to an idea is prospective, and the problem with this movie is that it does not show us the story from any sort of new angle.
When you think were Baz Lurman took the story in 96, and everything that has happened since then, 911, a black president, the financial crash, there was tons of of modern material to help give this film a modern up to date fresh look and feel, whilst staying true to the story. But instead they decided to be less forward thickening then an adaptation 16 (yes I said sixteen) years earlier, how does that work out.

I would say that my problem with it is that they did bring some new things to the story, but it just wasn't working. For example, I am sure that poor Will is spinning in his grave because they butchered his dialogue. At one point I wondered if I was watching an episode of CW's Reign. It seems a bit foolish to me to go through so much effort in trying to portray the story authentically (which I commend) such as filming in Italy, accurate costumes, etc. and then decide "hey let's just have em talk regular ol' british folks". It was a let down. The dialogue and most of the interactions lacked passion, connection, chemistry. It seemed like a middle school production of shakespeare with amateur actors. They chose an impressive cast, just about all of whom I have seen in other things and was impressed with, but it just didn't come together because the two leads did not work as our star-crossed lovers. A lot of their supporting cast outshone them. As for being forward thinking, we have seen this story in its original time period. We have even seen 96's modern portrayal. I wonder what it would be like to see R&J in a futuristic setting.
