If it takes place in Italy, why do they have English accents?
Is it a goof? It's not like this takes place in 55 A.D. or something, the actual story takes place in 14th century Italy...

In 'Casablanca':
Paul Henreid did NOT speak with a Czech accent.
Sydney Greenstreet did NOT speak with an Italian accent.
Peter Lorre did NOT speak with a Spanish/Basque accent.
Claude Rains did NOT speak with a French accent.
These were four of the principal roles in the film. In spite of NOT using the accents of their respective characters, the film is a much beloved and truly timeless classic. It will be for all time.
The point: The actors do NOT need to speak in authentic accents for the film to be good. Many films have proven this. Other characters in Casablanca DID use accents at least sort of authentic to their respective national origins. If the film has other strengths, it doesn't matter at all if accents are authentic. If they focus too much on that, other aspects of the film will no doubt suffer.
Because it was based on an English-language play written by an Englishman?
Why is the opera "Carmen" sung in french if the story takes place in Spain?
Yeah, they're dead; they're--all messed up!
Well, the original play is in English after all.
At least in this version they maintained the original locations - that is a breath of fresh air! The trailer looked great, location-wise.
Because everyone had English accents back then.
shareI am amazed at how people criticize this in modern movies. The Sound of Music is set in Austria (where they speak German), yet no one complains that the characters speak English. Memoirs of a Geisha is set in Japan, yet the characters speak English. Hamlet is set in Denmark, they don't speak Danish. I could go on and on and on.

Well its a Shakespeare play generally you speak in an English accent. Plus its not real English is Elizabethan English it would be weird to do that language in an Italian accent.
shareFrom what I've seen and heard, this is actually not Shakespeare's play, it's only based on it, but doesn't use his dialogue.

Oh my God TanRuNomad, you can't just ask people why they have English accents.
