I watched the first couple of seasons of Ancient Aliens and eventually gave up on the show. It seemed like they were reaching farther and farther to try to find evidence of the ancient alien hypothesis and I had had enough.

Well I found out that Season 12 was starting--which is insane! season 12?!--and I figured I'd give it a shot.

The first thing I noticed is that it looks like they've worked on the production a bit. It feels sleeker than the last time I watched it.

But the biggest surprise was that apparently now the show doesn't focus exclusively on the ancient aliens hypothesis but also covers a lot of general UFO topics.

After the first episodes of S12, I feel like I'm actually interested in this show again. I'll be damned.

They still doctor evidence to present it as a plausible theory. A recent episode about the 500 year old Turkish map of Antarctica looks nothing like the original map yet in the TV show they present an edited version and try to pass it off as the original.

If that's true, that's pretty fucked up. If they're going to push unlikely theories, that's fine, but they need to do it as honestly as they can.

The show gets a lot better. It's really firing on all cylinders the mid seasons. I think the newer episodes are really hit or miss. Some are just about new technologies we're developing. They even had one that was just all about how Steve Jobs is the greatest man in history. It was pretty ridiculous. This is basically just science channel stuff and then they throw in a line, "and maybe it all started with a gift from aliens." Way off premise. But the production is a lot better, the pacing faster, topics more varied, and there's a lot more interesting location shoots where they actually go places. I'm as big a fan now as I ever was.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that at this point they are seriously reaching to make the connection between whatever the topic is and the ancient aliens premise. Frankly, the show probably should've been ended years ago just because, as you say, they are way off premise at this point.

Personally I think the first season--which was only six episodes--was the best. I think they laid out their whole case in those six eps and I'm pretty sure it was meant from the beginning to just be a limited special with no second season. But I guess the ratings were just too good to stop there.

I OWN EVERY SEASON ON DVD AND ENJOY THEM ALL...GREAT SHOW...THEY REACH A BIT AT TIMES,BUT THEY ARE THEORIES AFYER ALL...SOME THEORIES ARE MORE FAR FETCHED...OVERALL,ITS ONE OF MY TOP FIVE ACTIVE SHOWS.

They have a bigger budget now. But they ran out of stories with even a shread of evidence after season 2. Now it's all conjecture for the gullible.

I haven't watched it in years at this point. Is it even still in production? If so, that is astonishing to me.
