back at Wal-mart, Hell is renamed to 'Apocalpse'

Was on the new release wall today at wal-mart, noticed on the back of the dvd it said that it's original name was Hell.
Anyone else have more info on this??

reply

I just saw the same thing an bought Apocalypse but I seen Hell n bought that too, I'm going to take Apocalypse back though after I find out that there isn't a difference

reply

strange that Walmart changed the name? Seems the same. I bought one at Walmart today.

reply

Stranger still is that they missed the opportunity to rename it "Light". Either they were attempting to cash in on the popular 'Apocalypse' or they just didn't bother to dig a little deeper and go for the translation.

reply

The correct translation would have been "bright". (German is my first language)

As explained in the other recent thread ("LOL this reviewer"), the original title is a German word (Hell), and it means bright (as in: opposite of dark).

I assume you have googled the translation or looked into a word book, where you have found a number of possible translations. The meaning of "hell" (adjective) depends on context, here it means "bright" (from too much sunlight).

A movie with the title "bright" would peobably not have been too inviting for fans of this genre, so the renaming into Apocalypse makes sense from a business point of view. For a linguist it is of course confusing.

I purchased Walmart's "exlusive" blu-ray/DVD combo, and even the title on the actual film has APOCALYPSE on it. Several friends' opinion seems to be that Walmart would not carry a film with the title HELL with the company's alleged Christian beliefs, therefore changing the title of this particular release to APOCALYPSE, though the word "hell" used for the title is just the German word for "bright." Kinda crazy, and since down the road this film probably won't still be in stock there, why bother with all the manufacturing changes? After all, in the long run nobody cares, and who ever decided to change the name should have just called it BRIGHT.... but I guess "Apocalypse" is an eye-grabbing title when spotting it on the shelf next to all the zombie flicks Walmart seems to stock.

reply

Guys, this is no surprise. Wal-Mart will not sell any explicit CD's at all. They carry clean versions of Eminem, etc. So of course they changed what they consider to be an expletive to "Apocalypse".

reply

The moron yanks think "hell" is a swear word that rival *beep* and *beep* for nastiness.

That's probably why the name was changed..

reply

I've got Hell on DVD. On the side of the case the circular Madman logo is next to the title.

From a distance it almost looks like it says "H E L L O".

reply

No, we don't think "hell" rivals any word like f*u%c#k_
but Wal-mart is a big chain of stores and if they
think that something would be the slightest controversial
as a title than they will ask for it to be changed.
They certainly wouldn't have a movie title called
"Monkey F!u^c##k%e&rs" up on their shelves either, lol.

Maybe so, about the relation to the starred words..

But even you equate it, jokingly, to "They certainly wouldn't have a movie title called
"Monkey F!u^c##k%e&rs" up on their shelves either, lol.
"

The point is that "hell" is ONLY a nasty word to bible bashers - to people whose religions doesn't have "hell" and to atheists, it's a nothing word, a fairy tale word.

To define and force the change of a movie because some bible-punchers don't like it is forcing their views, their religion even, on those other people.

It's censorship at its most pathetic.

reply

I agree 100 percent, but unfortunately, even some of the
non bible freaks wont like their little kids going around
saying the word hell, as stupid as that may sound, and
since wal-mart is supposed to be this huge family based
store, they have to please the most, or at least be the most "PC"
about what they put on their shelves.

The term "curse" word means to literally curse god, so to say
God Dammit is like saying "I damn you God", although nowadays
people just call any old bad word a curse word without even
knowing that it is incorrect.

"The term "curse" word means to literally curse god,"

This sounded wrong to me, but I thought I'd check it out just in case, and I havent found anything to support that.

Cursing has been around long before a mono-deity.

Hell is a swear word in American English, as well as a place of evil described by the bible. I am an atheist, but note that I did not insult those who believe in hell and biblical content. Just because my language, and, thus, interpretation of a word spelled with the letters "H-E-L-L" is different from yours, doesn't make me a moron. People of the world really need to stop pretending their ways are better than all others. While you point fingers and insult my part of the world, you are only demonstrating the very same behavior you are scorning.

On a lighter side, I wonder what Walmart renamed Hellraiser, if they even carry it.

reply

All of what you said might be so - but do you ascribe the same "courtesy" to people who read Lord of the Rings and think "Sauron" is a dirty word?

I bet not.

So why is the bible/religion/hell given special treatment - it's all JUST a fairy-tale, like LotR.

If we all had to watch out for words that mean something special in some made-up religion or other, we'd lose a lot of our vocabulary.

We joke about people who write under "religion:" - "Jedi" - but if they think "sith" is a swear-word, do we all have to stop using it?

Basic answer - you don't pander to stupidity and childish make-believe by sucking up to banning of words.

People who write "H E double-hockey-stick" or "HE!!" are MORONS.

I purchased the DVD for only eight dollars at a local Walmart in Central New Jersey.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

Yet another reason I haven't steeped foot in a Walmart in over 20 years. May it burn in Hell (Apocalypse)!

Walmart - Always Low Wages. Always.
