Post Apocalyptic movies like this but much better

I didn't hate this movie but I didn't enjoy it too much either highly predictable but not a bad popcorn film. The visuals we're pretty well done. However here are some movies in this genre and style done a whole lot better.

The Road
Pitch Black
The Book of Eli
The Children of Men
28 Days Later
I am Legend
The Divide

reply

Did you just say that The Book of Eli is better than this?! Wow - okay... im shocked.

Also, by the time you get to the end of this sentence, you will realise it is just my signature.

reply

The book of Eli?
The Children of Men?
I am Legend?
We definitely don't share the same taste in movies, I mean I am Legend is a really terrible remake of The Omega Man.

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

Remake or not, still a great movie, way better than Hell of course.

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither ~ B. Franklin

reply

Are you serious? its an awful movie, and sooooo Hollywood its a joke!!!!
Takes an excellent, and very dark book and makes it into a horrible forgetable popcorn movie.

Way better than Hell, in a word, No, of course.

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

It's peculiar how some people think being "sooooo Hollywood" is supposed to be an insult. As if Hollywood movies aren't the most successful, lucrative and popular movies. The IMDB Top 250 movies of all time is dominated by Hollywood films.

reply

No, Will Smiths vanity vehicle with all the video game zombies, sucks balls and Ass. Hell, while far from perfect is a much better film.

reply

Wow, I thought I AM Legend was one of the worst films i've seen, I expected either a great re-make of Omega Man, or a closer adaptation of the Story... but it was neither... It stank...

reply

Yeah the BOOK OF ELI was a billion times better.

reply

Jesus Christ, has no one seen Doomsday? It's better than all those weak ass apocaflicks.

reply

Uhm...? Omega Man was a poor remake of The Last Man On Earth with Vincent Price.
Still, a lot better than I Am Legend.

reply

The Omega man was based on the 1954 book I Am Legend by Richard Matherson.
I've never seen the last man on earth (I will soon though, I love Vincent Price) but its also based on the same book.

I love the Omega man, but I'm a bit of sucker for all 70's films so I might be a little rose tinted, plus I love the political message. I hated I am Legend, which was a shame because it could have been so much better :(

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

Yes, I know it's based on a book. But you wrote that I Am Legend was a "terrible remake of Omega Man with Charlton Heston" or something like that. So I just thought I'd point out that there is an older and, in my opinion, far superior adaptation of the book out there. :)

reply

I watched it last week, and I hate to say it your right! I never actually heard of it till you mentioned it, so thanks I really enjoyed it.
I think it was a massive shame that Hammer Pictures passed on it though, it really could have been one of their best films. I thought it was a great film but a little more money put into the effects, scenery and music would have really transformed it. How come its so obscure? It was a hell of a lot better than most of the films of the time.

I still love The Omega man tho, I love that whole 70's post apocolyptic vision, especially Heston watching Woodstock in the theater :)

I am Legend was awful, apparently it borrowed from both the Omega man and The Last Man on Earth, unfortunately none of the good stuff :( what a missed oppotunity, damn it!

Any more film tips???? Have you seen From Beyond The Grave? its a good creepy little Amicus film from the early 70's

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

Thanks for pointing out that film, I was unaware of it! and it does sound like a much more faithful adaptation!

Brilliant! (plus great actor of the era!!)

reply

If you haven't seen Last Man on Earth yet, you should. At least as good as Omega Man. BTW I thought Hell was a pretty bloody good effort.

reply

I Am Legend and The Omega Man were remakes of The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price.

reply

Sorry but:

I am Legend is a terrible remake from Omega Man? This not a remake, it based in the book, by Richard Matheson and its a remake from the oiginal movie.

Omega Man, is not even a remake of the original Vincent Price movie, its just that, Omega Man a version based on the book, and i really like Omega.

I am Legend (The original) is a very good movie, good acting, great direction, great garlic and great mirrors.

I come in peace; to kill you.

reply

Do you have any idea what your talking about?
The Last man on Earth, is the first film based on the book by Richard Matherson
The Omega Man is based on the book by Richard Matherson
The new (ish!) Film I Am Legend is based on The Omega man and the Last Man On Earth AND The Book By Matherson.
That is unless The Last mAn on Earth was called something else in your country?

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

1. its obvious that all are based on the book
2. last man is the 1st movie based on the book
3. what i mean about omega is: that movie is not a remake from last man, its just a movie based on the book
4. and im a legend is a remake from 1st movie not from omega
5. i refeer to last man as the original im a legend just to make point clearer for the post i was replying

and again, all are based on the same book, and yes, Mathersons book

reply

Yep that sounds right by me, I know what your saying now.
I just happen to like the Omega man, but I do agree Last man is the superior film

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

Sorry to say that Omega Man was a jumped-up Chuck Heston vehicle made over from The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price in the superior, poignantly desperate, nerve-wracking original.

reply

Not you too?
Nope The Omega Man was based on the same book, I am Legend by Richard Matherson, as The Last Man on Earth, it wasn't a remake.

However The Last Man on Earth was a good film too, but I prefer Omega Man just because I'm a kid of the 70's, no other reason its just personal choice in this case.

I come in peace, Shoot to kill!!!

reply

So, by your logic The Omega Man is a remake of The Last Man on Earth, right?

Enough is enough! I have had it with these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday thru Friday plane!

reply

Just to throw a little more confusion into the whole Last Man on Earth - Omega Man - I am Legend, trainwreck, when he made Night of the Living Dead, George Romero was influenced by the book I Am Legend. And that movie has had a number of sequels, remakes, remakes of sequels, etc. Anyone who can keep it straight gets a cookie, just not from me.

"My girlfriend sucked 37 d*cks!"
"In a row?"

reply

Children of Men is a classic. The other two suck.

reply

i am legend (movie) is not a remake of the omega man, they're just both adaptations of the same book along with the last man on earth.

reply

I thought film was ok, but post apoc films i prefer are

the quiet earth
mad max trilogy
omega man
a boy and his dog
delicatessen

and im sure i forgot a couple

reply

The road
escape from new york
children of men
12 monkeys
mad max
logans run
terminator 2
the stand
zombieland
waterworld
the postman
red dawn
jericho
doomsday
escape from absolom (ehhehe)

i could name dozen more if i could remember oh well

reply

I'm not sure how you can classify Red Dawn as post-apocalyptic. It is a war movie, not an end of the world movie. Same with Terminator 2, the world doesn't even end until the end of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

reply

Fire Next time (TV movie) is a a great choice for similar movie. USA release 3 hour mini-series. Craig T Nelson & Bonnie Bedilia (?)

reply

The 1984 BBC made film "THREADS" is about as bleak a Apocalyptic film one can see and far Superior to any of the above.

reply

I have found that BBC does produce good works. It is not to say that American production is poorer. We (USA) put out so much every year that there is bound to be some sub-standard stuff. Also, I don't get to see any foreign films in my small town and those I have found through IMDB are very entertaining.

reply

I don't understand, American Cinema is of the best in the World.
I also live in a small Village on an Island, west of a bigger Island (Ireland), albeit Western Europe. My point being, The Original poster asked for recommendations or better. I pointed out "Threads". If you have not seen it, I'd track it down.

Thom.

reply

This movie was pretty awful to watch and ended on a utterly forgetable note. Nothing happens, this prior build-up only leads to credits. Terrible. How does this turkey hold a 5.9 rating when there are a thousand better movies out there?

reply

Nice recommendation! am english and never heard of this before, looks like something id enjoy, nice one!

reply

Boom there it is. Threads is THE end all/be all of apocalypse movies. All others are Disney films compared to that movie. Nothing even comes close.

I think it should get some credit for waking people up to the devastation of nuclear holocaust. It probably helped stop nuclear war.

reply

I don't believe it is fair to compare those movies with this one. This is not a superb movie but all the ones you listed with the exception of The Divide were big budget studio films and can pull off an Apocalyptic wasteland much better.

reply

I enjoyed the film, well made and acted. But to look at it constructively, it is no different than a "Mad family in the woods" against the backdrop of "Light".

"Threads" however feels more at home in 2012 - despite being made in 1984.

Thom.

The movies you listed have very little in common with Hell (and some of them have very little in common with each other).

Hell has post-apocalyptic trappings like The Road but it's a lot more like a standard horror movie like Chainsaw Massacre, Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes in its structure and actual genre.

Token characters that are poorly developed, as is the story. It's too bad, it's got a lot going for it. I liked the mood and the buildup and I really enjoyed Hannah Herzsprung's performance. The cinematography was very good.

But it has a poor story that fails to elevate the movie and is extremely annoying when characters keep on doing unbelievable things. The action sequences are pretty to look at but extremely boring as well.

reply

I suspect The Road while being similar to Hell is far superiour, is it?

my vote history:

reply

yes

reply

The Divide and this were pretty much on par. The rest you listed were much, much better, though.

reply

Could somebody please enlighten us and tell us which part of pitch black was post-apocalyptic? because maybe you've seen a secret edition which can be categorized as post-apocalyptic. whats that? sorry?...i cant hear you! oh RIGHT! pitch black IS NOT post-apocalyptic!!!
