Favorite 'Ip Man'?

I consider this my favorite Ip Man movie compared to the other two. This is the only one that I can watch two or three times. Because the action is much better choreographed and obviously the fight scenes are 10 times more realistic.

And the return of Yuen Biao to action is very worthy. The plot, obviously lacking does not quite bother me because this is an action movie after all. I can't understand why both Ip Man 1 & 2 are being praised critically, because they are both historically inaccurate and the plots are nowhere near solid.

The actions, though stylized and ass kicking, but try watching it for the second and third time, it gets really daunting. I know The Legend is Born would be the least favorite to most people. For me, I definitely prefer this one!

I thought this movie was garbage to be honest.

But by your comments, I can totally understand why we are in a disagreement of
why one was better than the other.

I disliked this movie for the same reasons you enjoyed this one.
Although Ip Man 1 was inaccurate, this one was barely close at all to the early
life if Ip Man. Things just got throw together for the sake of having more fight
scenes, or for some made up romance story.

The fighting was alright. This is a fighting movie. But all the flying around
and wires stunts was horrible in my opinion. What made Ip Man 1 great was the
choreography. The quality of the fights. It was just just a bunch of ninja flips
going around which were obviously done with wires. Even Ip Man 2 suffered a bit with the unrealistic fighting. That's not even Wing Chun. Just more silly "cool moves" to make people say "WOW this is a cool fighting movie! with no plot!"

I personally was expecting more plot, and more quality fighting. And not fights
set up just because "A" and "B" meets and decides to just start fighting for the sake of having more fight scenes.

Honestly, I consider none of the Ip Man movies to have solid plots. The reaction of my friends after watching the first Ip Man in the theaters said it all.. Obviously, hard hitting action. I consider the first Ip Man to be somewhat better than the 2nd for the same reasons.

Ip Man 2 is definitely unrealistic, just a little more thrilling than the first and the action was overly done.Exaggerating...

I agree, I don't like how the 2nd movie turned into wire-fu. We get enough of that these days. Man, the acting was also the WORST! What were they thinking when the cast the English parts to them jokers?

Ip Man 1 has a 59 Metascore, and part 2 a 67 Metascore. Not that praised.

My complains about this one are the missing plot, the lack of a finale battle... Overall a bit less professional than the other two. On the other hand I liked the fights; the fight with Ip Man's real son was awesome!

For me Donnie Yen was a bit too static in the other version even if he kicked major ass, he was a bit like Steven Seagal (the guy who never gets hit!).

So that's why I like the Donnie versions a bit more.

Best Ip Man. The Director wanted real fighting(no wire) actors to do all their own stunts. This is a Kung Fu Action Movie and the plot could be much better.

I haven't see this movie yet. It comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray Dec 13th, so I'm ordering mine now. I already own the first 2 movies on Blu-Ray. For me, the 1st Ip Man is still the best. I thought the acting was excellent and so was the sets and environments they film in. The movie flowed well, with a decent story and great action in between. True, the accuracy of Ip Man's life in all these movies are tainted. Still Donnie Yen did an amazing job. In the first film the last fight was way to short. Just another 3-4 mins would have been perfect. In the 2nd Ip Man film, the last fight was too long. The last 20 mins of the 2nd film seemed rushed. From the looks of this 3rd movie, the plot seems to be taking a back seat to the fighting. I've watch the trailer and will still get this to complete my collection. I'm hoping Donnie Yen does a 3rd film, but this time shows the training of Bruce Lee and other people he trained in Wing Chun.

Nothing in film 2 or 3 compares to the brutal and emotionally wrought battle in the Japanese Dojo after a certain character is murdered in the first film. That battle gives me chills and is the best fight scene in all 3 movies in my opinion, not only because it's vicious and exciting, but it is a scene with such profound emotional resonance (after watching this man of peace) being so restrained before that point.
