Looking to pick up a boxed set of the first season of a new sci fi show. which show do people recommend? i know the plot and narrative to all the shows but just wondering which is best for production values, CGI, acting, and overall successfulness in deliverance.
Terra Nova was an illogical cheesy mess and Season 1 of Falling Skies wasn't much better (the only season I watched). I haven't seen Defiance but it doesn't seem to be getting the pasting in the IMDb forums that the other two did while on-air so probably that one (although I'd strongly recommend buying the "Space Above and Beyond - The Complete Series" boxset instead, if you're a sci-fi fan who also likes well-rounded characters, you won't go wrong with that one).

shareHaven't seen Falling Skies(yet). I really liked Terra Nova even with the episodic characteristic. I thought the CGI was good but other people might say the acting was bad. Defiance is cool except for the weird alien practices and a few sex scenes.

I like both Falling Skies and Terra Nova shame Falling Skies was the one that got another two seasons but I did like season 2 and it got a lot better.
As for Defiance there on my planner to watch but not seen any yet.
But Terra Nova and Falling Skies both get a 7 out of 10.

I thought Falling Skies was awful. It tries to be super serious, but is executed in such an amateur manner.
Terra Nova is intentionally lighter. It's a little hokey and got flaws, but it knows it's kind of a family adventure show. It succeeds at what it is better than Falling Skies does.

I'd go with Terra Nova. Falling skies started off somewhat good but got predictably clichéed as the first season went on.
Terra Nova was...."a breath of fresh air" in many ways. acting is generally good CGI very good, though thanks to FOX bungling it it was cancelled after only one season and that ends in a cliffhanger but still a great show.
Terra Nova - Canceled so no point.
Falling Skies - A LOT of filler and painful angst but still ok if you can stand it
Defiance - The best of the three and doesn't feature as much filler and angst.
Defiance - hands-down favorite. Plus: it's already renewed for Season 2, which starts June 2014. Also a plus: there's a Defiance video game you can buy. Defiance doesn't have dinos, but it does have giant bugs and terraforming.
I actually liked Terra Nova and am sorry it got canned too early. But there were problems with the basic structure of the show, and no amount of CGI can make up for that. Still, I would have kept watching Terra Nova if it was still airing.
I actually own all three lol and I'm not a big fan of sci-fi...loved falling skies which I started watching cause of Noah Wylie (sp?) Have yet to start defiance and I'm only on episode 2 of terra nova
