Fritz the German

It was always a bit of a mystery how Derren Nesbitt managed such a successful television career; but I'm watching this film now on TV, and keep wondering if there's going to be a plot twist where it turns out 'Fritz' is only pretending to be German...I mean, this has to be one of the least convincing Germans seen on the big screen in the last 50 years - he doesn't even know how to pronounce München.

So, someone put me out of misery, as it's such a terrible movie I don't think I'm going to make it to the end. Please tell me Fritz turns out to be really from Romford or somewhere.

P.S. Note to first-time (and I hope last-time) director Tim Lewiston: putting in a chunk of The Ipcress File's haunting soundtrack doesn't make a bad scene better, or even make it feel any more like the 1960s. Mind you, the whole glued-on-top pseudo-60s soundtrack is grim - odd, really, considering almost all Mr Lewiston's career has been in the sound dept. The entire film is thick with over-egged 60s movie references, which would be fun if they were subtler and wittier, and the underlying film stronger.
