Kanade and Otonashi

When you finished watching the series, did you get the impression that Otonashi was in love with Kanade or that he loved her? My interpretation all along was that he thought of her like his little sister. The parallels between the two make me think he loved her like his sister: they were both friendless (one by sickness, the other by purpose), Kanade seemed younger than most of them in purgatory creating a sibling positioning, etc. Otonashi said that he wished he spent all of his time being with his little sister because it was his purpose in life and she needed a friend, so when he begged Kanade to say it was because he wanted to fulfill that wish through her.
