locusts=morlocs (time machine)

Having seen both old and new Time Machine films i can't help but notice how similar these two species are. They both live in the ground and spring up from the ground in a similar fashion, they both share some form of history with humans, and they can't stand being in the sunlight or around fire. I can only assume if cliffy B wasn't watching time machine when thinking of the locusts that he at least got some inspiration from them.
