What's up with Rex's new accent?

So when the series started, Rex was amnesia boy that spoke nothing but English, but now that we are close to the season finale, all of a sudden he's busting out the Spanish slang with perfect inflection, like it was his first language. 'Scuse me, but uno momento, por favor. Did a caucasian Rex not test well with the focus groups after the Arizona immigration law incident, or what? What's next, Ben Ten discovers the power of the teachings of Islam?

Leave the cartoons alone folks... PC for the sake of PC is just insulting.

reply

I think Daryl Sabara is of Latin heritage so Rex apparently is also.

reply

yeah I think they intended him to be that way...
I mean in the second episode...he seemed to fluently understand spanish.
when the kid told him that cactus creature the guy was a priest.

plus...I mean its not like he's TOTALLY caucasian...
he's much darker than your standered white cartoon character is.

reply

yeah i though rex was of mexican descent. he could be an american citizen, you know.
oh wait, logic overpowered me. if he has amnesia and he was raised in a spanish-speaking home, would he remember how to speak spanish? assuming english was indeed his first language.

Some of us find Salvation in Nothing.

Amnesia doesn't in reality affect everything about you. People with amnesia may forget who they are, but they can still show skill and abilities that they would have used regularly before forgetting details of their lives.

From wikipedia:

It should be noted, however, that there are different types of memory, for example procedural memory (i.e. automated skills) and declarative memory (personal episodes or abstract facts), and often only one type is impaired. For example, a person may forget the details of personal identity, but still retain a learned skill such as the ability to play the piano.

And as for Rex's appearance... he is what tv tropes likes to call "Ambiguously Brown"

"If you should need me, tap this staff three times on a wall."
"Magic?"
"No, it's just loud."

reply

Huh. I thought he was Italian to be honest.

reply

character was always that way.

reply

Nope, rewatch the first 6 episodes. He didn't start tossing in the spanish slang until after his blonde haired friend took a leave of absence.

reply

Get with the program, Rex was Latino in the comic that the cartoon is based on. Rex being a Spanish speaker is hardly something new, just something they didn't put in the firs few episodes. Don't like it? Complain to the comic book creator. Got a problem with a popular cartoon character speaking Spanish?

reply

Where did you get the idea that Rex was Latino in the comic? Rex in the original comic M. Rex was white with blonde hair and blue eyes.
