I don't understand how that dog survived after being thrown into the water. The dog was in the water for quite awhile, how did the sharks miss him?

He wasn't bleeding, and the sharks already had Nick (then, the sheriff), the stabbed redneck and bloody Sara to entertain themselves.

What I would like to know is how the hell he survived the poisoned stuff the sheriff left at the house. The dosis was intended for humans, so surely it should have been fatal for a 30kg dog...?
