What's the deal with Jamie's dad?

Did anybody else wonder what was up with the whole subplot of Jamie not knowing who her dad was?

Through the whole movie she keeps asking her mom, who keeps giving her different answers. Then when Jamie visits Dylans family in California, his dad mistakenly thinks it's someone else he's met before.

I figured there was going to be some bizzaro twist at the end of the movie where she is his half sister or something based on her mom being vague about her dad, and his dad remembering some girl he let get away along time ago.

That's what I kept thinking too, or well - I knew Dylan and Jamie would end up together, so I didn't think it would actually happen but throughout the whole movie that seemed like major foreshadowing.

I think script originally was going to go with Jamie/Dylan agreeing to end as friends and nothing more. Because for me the whole 'I love you' bit was too much ~ even for what they went through.

I agree that It perhaps was going to showcase the mother and father running into each other and realizing they perhaps did same thing that the kids are doing now (i.e. FWB). Especially with the whole airport scene where the father see's Jamies mother. But assuming writers changed it up ~ due to audience feedback of original and came up with the corny ending we got.

I had the inkling that there would be a twist that they would be half-siblings too. Because they never resolved the not knowing her dad. I told my girlfriend halfway through, "I hope the twist isn't that his dad is actually her dad."

All you people are kidding, right?

Long before we meet Dylan's father, it's clearly established that Jamie's father was some kind of exotic ethnic type, only her mother can't remember exactly what kind. (Or has blocked it from memory as a defense mechanism -- they have a conversation about this later.)

I mean, really, do you know any couples that look like Richard Jenkins and Patricia Clarkson -- who have a daughter that looks like Mila Kunis? Any casting director who cast that as a family would get laughed out of a job.

Meanwhile, when Dylan's father isn't lucid, he mistakes every woman he sees for the love of his life that he let get away. They don't have to look like her.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.
