First of all, I've never been to New York or LA, but doesn't it seem that Dylan was very naive about life in NYC? He seemed to not know much about living in a city when he got there. Are the two cities that different?
shareIn structure - yes. L.A. is a metropolis that's spread out over a huge area and most of the building there are rather small.
NYC (Manhattan) is built on an oversize rock (24 sq miles) surrounded by a river so the growth had no where to go but up! Hence the myriad of skyscrapers.
