Slightly biased
It's hard not to paint Van Gogh in a favorable light; he is one of the most known artists in history and his story is famously tragic. I myself can't think about his death without crying.
And it's true, he was an eccentric, odd, beautiful, unique man who struggled though his life to find understanding, love, and peace.
However, I noticed they sort of glossed over some of the less savory bits of his life in this documentary. The most prominent example is probably the mention of Vincent's hospitalization for syphilis.
I sympathize, and in some ways empathize, with Vincent and his very difficult life, but I really wanted to see all the sides of him. This was the most in-depth look at the artist I've ever been presented with, but it still has a few holes.
Oh, and can I just say, Benedict Cumberbatch was MAGNIFICENT! I have never been more moved by a performance, at least not in a documentary. It was beautiful, honest, and I commend him enormously for it.
