Slightly biased

It's hard not to paint Van Gogh in a favorable light; he is one of the most known artists in history and his story is famously tragic. I myself can't think about his death without crying.

And it's true, he was an eccentric, odd, beautiful, unique man who struggled though his life to find understanding, love, and peace.

However, I noticed they sort of glossed over some of the less savory bits of his life in this documentary. The most prominent example is probably the mention of Vincent's hospitalization for syphilis.

I sympathize, and in some ways empathize, with Vincent and his very difficult life, but I really wanted to see all the sides of him. This was the most in-depth look at the artist I've ever been presented with, but it still has a few holes.

Oh, and can I just say, Benedict Cumberbatch was MAGNIFICENT! I have never been more moved by a performance, at least not in a documentary. It was beautiful, honest, and I commend him enormously for it.

Totally agree with you. i been reading about van Gogh lately and im fascinated by him. I think he was such a beautiful person but also had some mental problem.
Benedict did an amazing job in this documentary. but like you said i think they portrayed the tragic artist and his fall. I was reading some of his letters and van Gogh sounded like a smart and passionate person.

Passionate and full of compassion as well, the fact that he wanted to evoque feelings, sentiments, emotions into people through his paintings it was remarkable, instead of being admired and praised by everyone.

He was mad then and maybe even mad today, to feel things with so much heart and emotion. Truly a wonderful man, such a sad story.

Typos? sorry I'm a foreigner.

What better and just way than to use Vincent's own words from his letters to his brother , family and (few)friends to describe his torment and inner soul.

I'm so happy I found this semi documentary ...it is a beautiful presentation of the artist's life and Cumberbatch is , as another post above stated, MAGNIFICENT as Van Gogh.

Hopefully others seeing this message board appear on the main page of moviechat will open it , read the positive reviews and decide to watch "Painted with Words".
