Question about the German soldier...

I thought their focus was to keep the soldier alive, so that everybody would have a happy ending. But then that bomb fell, and didn't explode... and then it DID explode. So the soldier died, right? But then they had their happy ending anyway. I must have missed something.

You definitely missed something, apparently the final scene. In the final scene we see a current newspaper headline that Hans, the soldier, became a wealthy philanthropist. He just died and his ashes are with his daughter, Samantha, and granddaughter, Jody.

Hans, the soldier, who died, went on to become a wealthy philanthropist? I didn't miss the ending. It just didn't jibe with the fact that the bomb went off and killed him.

Watch it again. Hans did not die in the bombing. He hides in a bunker and survives.
