Worst South African stereotype ...

OK ... so I enjoyed the movie, but I live in SA and many of the locations, and scenes are huge misconceptions of what it really is like here. Many scenes, like the one where her father is in the airplane with all the chickens and rusty wings etc. are complete bull! We have normal planes! everywhere! period! with air conditioning, in - flight meals and flight attendants. And all the dirt roads they travel on, there are numerous Highways to travel by all over. Dirt roads are only found in farmlands and rural areas. Lastly, there are no wild rhinos, elephants or big 5 just roaming free outside of game reserves. The country has many sophisticated cities and normal suburbs like you would find anywhere else. Not just townships and poorer districts. Many of these areas can be found in SA, but alongside normal societies.

and that's my rant.

Well said. I totally agree with what you said. It makes me wonder how many other countries are shown in a totaly misleading light.

I agree about the plane. But if I am not mistaken most of those surf spots are in rural areas. I might have them confused with somewhere else but I think that's right. I have surfed many of those spots. And I have seen wild elephants off of game preserves during my 25+ years of living in different areas around the country. I will admit most of my homes were in rural areas, but I did live in Johannesburg and Jeffrey's Bay.
I do not see a stereo type in the movie. To me it seems like they are trying to highlight the town ships and poor districts. The movie creators were probably trying to highlight the hard ships in the country with the air plane scene and the town ships. I do not think that it was a stereo type.

Is it possible that they had to walk through a reserve to get to the beach?

Otherwise I totally agree with you.
