I dont get what all the fuss is about the Avatar series. Can someone explain to me?

I just don't get it , it just doesnt look any good to me. The effects, the dialogue, the acting, everything just looks mediocre and boring.

It's like, if you asked me to come up with a script for a movie, being not a hollywood script writer or a writer of any kind, I would imagine I'd make something like Avatar. Then I'd throw it away, but James Cameron some how got it made into a multi billion dollar movie.

The middle hour in high frame rate 3d is the best thing I've ever seen. Best experience of my life. Seen it 3 times. Will go again.

Closest I'll ever get to swimming with whales. That's good enough for me.

Also the last hour is the greatest action ever. That counts too.

The best experience of your life was seeing high frame rates?
Really? Because it seems like there are a lot more things to enjoy and experience over the course of one's life, rather than just seeing high frame-rates.

As for 3D? That was invented in the 50s.

At the same time, please explain the secret of James Cameron's popularity... He has done a couple of interesting movies (the first terminator and The Abyss (extended cut)), but neither one is among his most popular movies and its been over three decades since The Abyss.

Palatable stories conjoined with visual spectacle. He stays safe with the former, but delivers the exceptional with the latter.

It looks amazing on the screen! Star wars and Matrix wasnt great acting either but you knew you were seeing something new that was going to change the industry. I wish he would have done the sequels sooner.

True on the acting angle. Keanu Reeves is the modern day Mark Hamill. Both embarrassingly bad actors.

But they were surrounded by some of the greatest actors in cinematic history. Alec Guiness, Harrison Ford, Lawrence Fishburn. Their movies had historically memorable writing as well.

Avatar has a nice hook. Memorable CGI. That’s where its qualities end. No one can remember a single characters name. Unlike Ben Kenobi, Han Solo, Morpheus, Neo, which have been household names for decades.

Avatar is a modern day Jurassic Park. It’ll earn the occasional rewatching once a decade when you stumble across it on TV, just to see how well the CGI stands up. Other than that it’s forgettable.

But the visuals don't even look that impressive to me. That was my whole point. Some cat-faced blue skinned aliens? You thikn the CGI isn't going to look dated in 10 years, but think about in 50 years, any novelty of the effects will be worn off.

It has been well over 50 years since Citizen Kane, and time has done nothing to age that film, it has only gotten better with age. If a movie is good , the passing of time won't affect it's quality. Empire Strikes Back, Apocalypse Now for example. Almost 50 year old and do they look any worse? No, if anything they look better.

Not all films are just special effects extravaganzas, which lose thier value over time. Only the poorly made ones.

And this, "Avatar"......... This is one of those poorly made special effects films which will age terribly over time.

The good ones will still look good. The crap ones will age poorly. For example, movies from the Golden Age of hollywood such as Orson Welles' Citizen Cane, or Marilyn Munroe in Some Like It Hot , still look great today. How was what I said a stupid statement? The only stupid statement was coming from you, stating that how old a film is has any indication on quality.

Cameron is good at making movies that deliver the viewer away from reality for the duration of the movie. He is very good at making excellent special effects serve a mediocre script in a way, that not many directors can, which for many is worth at least one admission. In a word, he is very good at making escapism.
