this was supposed to come out today

James Cameron and Fox have set the release dates for the four “Avatar” sequels, starting on Dec. 18, 2020, for “Avatar 2.”

“Avatar 3” will open Dec. 17, 2021, followed by a three- year break for “Avatar 4, set for Dec.20, 2024. “Avatar 5” will then open on Dec. 19, 2025.

It really is sad, the goddamn pandemic is ruining the blockbuster film industry! Not just the movie industry as a whole, but specifically the kind of CGI-heavy mindless action sci-fi showpiece movie that comes out in summer or at Xmas, and is supposed to earn a billion or two dollars in worldwide returns.

I LIKE that kind of stupid showy movie, and will miss them if they vanish along with the movie theaters.

but why can those technicians work on the cgi in an office or something?

reply

The problem is that all those technicians who spend years working on CGI for these movie want paying, and paying for millions of person-hours does add up. To the point that the film needs to earn a billion dollars to earn back its cost, and I don't know that that'll be happening with streaming releases.

reply

Agreed. They really do need the box office run, and if that means postponing yet again until after the pandemic there's really no other choice. Bankrolling a whole bunch of sequels before seeing how the first one does was a risky move to begin with!

reply

I'm gonna say that's bullshit. I've seen plenty of evidence that this money is going elsewhere. Looks at Irishman or the last episode of Mandalorian - those are expensive deepfakes, yet youtubers can do a waaay better job for a tiny fraction of the cost.

reply

Just because something isnt up go your standards, doesnt mean it didnt cost a fortune. This is Hollywood!

reply

Well, in the US army, a coffee mug costs 300 dollars. It's corruption/money laundering, pure and simple.

What a truly depressing thought. I'd have seen A2 for sure this weekend or maybe this coming week (and would've already seen the likes of Bond, Top Gun 2, GB3 and various others that were due out in 2020 but maybe not WW84 or Black Widow)

It would've been a nice reminiscence of going to see Avatar December 2009 ..😢

not only will that not happen but its uncertain if cinema going will even be a thing ever again 😡 god knows what it means for mega budget movies like Avatar... will they be able to be made like before? can the Avatar sequels even make their money back now?(i bet A4 and 5 will be quietly cancelled)

I don't know what these movies are gonna do. It's popular to hate them but I'm a big fan. This whole thing has been a billion dollar labor of love for a decade with endless man hours. It was Cameron himself who predicted the implosion of the blockbuster and it looks like he's gonna get stuck with the hot potato in his hands. The theater industry, if it even even recovers, is gonna take years to get back up to steam enough to handle these films. These movies are specifically made for the theater, probably feature some next gen 3D. You can't dump that kind of thing on netflix. I don't see how they could possibly make their money back. It'll take a miracle just to get them exhibited properly.

I'm kind of surprised Cameron hasn't taken it upon himself to personally find a cure for the virus (between directing Avatar sequels) just so he can get his Avatar sequels in the theatres before they become extinct

reply

It's not really popular to hate Avatar. A few loud-mouthed (fingered) trolls trash Avatar consistently, but the fans don't feel the need to endlessly post about it. 7.8 on IMDB and 82% on Tomatoes means WAY more people like it than don't.

Actually I think I'd prefer it if they end up releasing each film one year apart. Though the dates in IMDb now say 2022, 24, 26, 28.
