why is this guy famous? Why was this movie made? Not a troll

Who is jay moriarty? Did he surf the biggest wave in history?

not trying to offend anyone, but every time i see this ad. I wonder why an exec greenlit this movie, it doesn;t seem like anything special.

What exactly is his claim to fame?

the fact that he wiped out horrendously on his very first Mavericks wave and it was caught on film and printed in the New York Times gave him instant recognition world wide

Sounds like a reality "star"...they're all a bunch of failures but they have world wide recognition...

This may help explain Jay Moriarity's true claim to fame. Props!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ko6kH4SKlHk and a few more related videos on YouTube are worth seeing.

And this http://www.theinertia.com/surf/coaching-jay-moriarity

And especially this, Impressions of Jay: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uGDPy7v2UqM

I am glad the movie was made, and appreciated seeing it on TiVo, but it seems almost like the movie trivializes it all, making it so mundane and banal, like a Disney made-for-TV featurette. Sadly, that's probably why it did so poorly in the box office. Now I want to read the book.

More than 1,000 surfers went out in the ring for his memorial service in 2001. The backstory is even more engaging than the movie was... LIVE LIKE JAY! A legend among legends... Wow.

Edit:

This is what it's like, just for the SPECTATORS at MAVERICKS:

The guy represents everyman.

He represents the beauty of the non-famous. The ordinary people who have nothing, no family, no money, only some crazy ass dream and a beating heart, and a handful of really good friends.

...the fact that he wiped out horrendously on his very first Mavericks wave...
That particular session he wiped out on his first wave. IRL he'd been surfing Mavericks for a number of months, which is obviously different from the movie.

reply

Why not?

Everyone does extraordinary things every day. Jay is no exception. What do you do? This is the question a movie like this, and a person who lives a life like Jay, asks. Do you give in to fear, or do you use it? Those who truly LIVE life use their fears rather than let their fears keep them from living.

"There's no more cunning expression of fear than complacency."--Marianne Williamson

It's true that I never read responses.

How many big names in surfing do you personally know? For people that love surfing and follow the sport he was a well-known figure. I know people who ask "What's with #3 stickers on so many cars?" and "Who's Dale?"

Jay was the first kid to charge big surf, at the time it was only seasoned men who would train for big big surf. Jay got younger kids to realize that if you train hard you can be a waterman at an early age. Today there are a few teenagers that just go across the globe for the hunt of big surf, they don't go on ASAP tour or enter local contest. Hope this helps you out a little bit.

Looks like someone needs to get out more.

I agree. Judging by the other posters, this guy isn't that big a deal.

Basically, he was a expert sportsman at a young age in a sport that is moderately popular. Big deal...
