Another stupid question but, I'm assuming he was in the process of being raped to? Or was the crazy guy just trying to kill him?

Just trying to kill him I believe. Or just incapacitate him so he could continue (kill seems more likely, the guy was sadistic)

He may well have been trying to rape him. He is a sick and twisted maniac after all.
