I watch a lot of disturbing movies, but this was garbage.

***Spoiler-ish but not really***

Nothing worse than a filmmaker who slaps a "edgy" ending on a movie just to show he's not making another cliche genre movie, despite the fact that it's a cliche genre movie. Seriously, I watch disturbing movies to fall asleep at night I'm so desensitized. (Like that french family movie Inside, or that french coming-of-age story Martyrs, or that French romance movie High Tension... Wait a minute, the french are pretty messed up aren't they? lol)

Anyway, I digress. Joel Schumacher could make a better movie with Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman... and if that's not an insult to the filmmaker then how about this: Did you think that ending worked? Did you watch it after it was edited together? If so, someone take away his camera so he can go start a real career at Starbucks or something. There's nothing worse than a movie that wastes my time, and this is a prime example. Just good enough to string you along until the shark jumping begins, then you HAVE to watch just to see the train wreck of celluloid unfolding before you. Then an ending that's not only pointless, but just dumb. People don't act like that bro, no one would ***SEMI-SPOILER*** leave a dude in the car without checking! No one would run upstairs to make a phone call in that situation at the end!

Another movie full of people doing things they would never ever do if that was actually happening. Sweet. Wish I would've played GTA V for an hour instead.

Checking what?? If the guys was dead?? and if he wasnt dead?
then what, was he to kill him? So the dad shoots the guy, then ends
up in jail for life. nice. Ok, so no one would call the police?? what was he
supposed to do? you seem to have all the answers.

Wish I would've played GTA V for an hour instead.

Yes, now the truth, you play Grand Theft Auto, so automatically
that makes you a badass, and you know exactly what anybody would
do in any given situation. Nice.

Idiot....

Why the hell would the Dad end up in jail for shooting they guy?! Are you serious? On top of that he could have shot the guy in the leg or something to at least prevent him from getting too far.

So many people praise the ending for being "realistic". They fail to mention how the ending comes about as a result of the lead character making an incredibly dumb and unrealistic move that no sane human being would do.

reply

The very first thing the dad was thinking about was "get to my family", as far as he was concerned, the other guy in the car was either dead already or really messed up. You don't do around shooting people in the legs or worse just shooting them to kill them when they are seriously injured and unarmed. Do you have any idea what the laws are like in Spain? I know I don't, but I bet they are not as lax as they are in some US states. If this was in Florida, where I live, the guy could put a bullet in all of those attackers heads, and get away with it, but in Spain it may be criminal offense, regardless of the situation. I have know idea. But do you really think the Dad is thinking about all of this, no way, he wants to get home and check on his family.
Remember this is a foreign movie, so it would have been made by taking all of its countries laws in mind. You say it isn't a sane thing to do?? I say if he would have shot the guy in the leg or something, that would have been the unrealistic ending.

reply

Eh yes you do shoot people that have broken into your home, hurt you and your family, and made serious threats to kill them. Only an absolute moron without a brain wouldn't shoot the guy when they had the chance.

I'm from Europe, I've been to Spain more times than I can remember. It's not some criminal underworld. Of course you can get away with shooting someone in self defense if it's to avoid serious threat or menace. What country on this planet would not think the father would be justified in shooting the criminal? Legal systems shouldn't even need to be checked, it's basic common sense.

It's a foreign country to you, but not the whole world. I don't know any American movies or TV shows that don't make sense to European audiences based on American laws. It works both ways. I hardly think anyone watching it would pause to think "I wonder will the daughter go to jail now for bashing the guys head in who just raped her?". That really doesn't need to be explained because it's beyond obvious.

First off, you seem to think I suffer from some kind of xenophobia, and because I am American that I think we are the best and ya'll else suck.
Well that can't be further from the truth. I, along with a growing number us here, believe firmly that this country is by far the best place to live in.
Without getting into a huge debate about this subject, I think that I can make you see my point of view with just a few words.
OK, so here is the deal: Besides the country that a movie and or real life happen in, and besides what laws that particular country has dealing with firearms and self-defense, not everybody has it in them to "fight back". Whether or not it is something instilled by their parents growing up(always use words) or its something that is in their DNA where they just don't have that spirit in them.
Regardless of what you feel when you watch this movie, and how mad it makes you, you must agree that there are people out there that are basically pussies, pardon my french.

Listen. It's like this: The writer or director of this film decided to do in the direction of "lets make the audience really pissed off with a crappy ending". It was done on-purpose, it is not the first time, and won't be the last time.
If you want a movie that the good guy gets to kick some butt, and gets his her comeuppance, then let me suggest 3 movies at 3 levels of realism. First, and no spoilers here I think, is the Kill Bill movies. These films show revenge on a grand scale, if not completely in a unrealistic manner. The 2nd movie is another
Tarantino film, "Django Unchained", this time a man gets his vengeance, with a little more realism thrown in. OK now for the 3rd one: This baby is most realistic "this is exactly what I think I would do" type movie, if you had the skill level to achieve it. The film is a newer one called "Your Next". Now not to give too much away, if that is even possible with todays trailers, but basically its a home invasion like "The Strangers", but turned on its head because the girl that was just a guest at the house starts to kick some bad guy butt.

so more than a few words, but really its just a movie, but there are some dumb ass people out there, and those dumb ass people like to marry other dumb ass people, and then they have dumb ass kids, so it is not impossible for someone in real life to do the exact opposite that a normal smart person would do, plus they are in a extreme situation, so its hard to say how anyone would act, even someone with training can make a bad call. Cops mess up all the time, shoot innocent kids and crap.

reply

Xenophobia!? Where did you get that from?? Just because I said the movie wasn't foreign to everyone? Even if you hadn't mentioned you were from Florida my point would have remained exactly the same.

Even if someone is a pussy, it doesn't take much strength or skill to shoot someone who is already out of it. Especially if it could save you and your families lives. Plus the character already fought back in the house and near killed himself by crashing the car so he didn't really come across as someone who would be afraid to shoot the guy.

This is not the first horror/thriller I've seen with an unhappy ending, far from it. It didn't piss me off, I hated all of the characters because of how dumb they were, and it was completely obvious that was the direction the movie was going. I would have still thought it was crap even if it did end happily ever after.

My point (which we've gone OT from) was simply that the argument of "oh but the ending was so realistic, it wouldn't have made sense if they got away" that I see a lot of people make for this movie, doesn't really stand when you consider the amount of unrealistic generic "horror movie clichés" that went on previously. Oh he never thought to check if the bad guy was dead *roll eyes*, oh there's no signal in the basement he needs to go upstairs to make a phone call *roll eyes*, oh there's only one bullet left in the gun *roll eyes*. They're all just convenient plot devices that wouldn't be out of place in a low budget slasher flick. The ending was just tacked on to try shock people. There's nothing original there.

Can't say I was a massive fan of You're Next but I can forgive how stupid and obvious it was because it's not trying to be anything more than just mindless fluff. This was marketed as something harrowing and clever, when it's neither. The 12 shot thing is fairly interesting but that's about it.
