Why can't people understand what this is?

Is it so hard? Even Roland Emmerich himself makes jokes about it during the movie. IT IS MEANT AS PURE ACTION SCI-FI ENTERTAINMENT PEOPLE!!!

There you have it. No need to think more. Switch off brains, laugh and be entertained. Go watch intellectual french black and white movies if you want something else.

The most cringe-worthy moment of these types of movies is when people try to pick them apart, as if they were trying to deliver a clever storyline lol.

Well, yeah, but there are such things as well made sci-fi action films (Edge of Tomorrow to name one in recent years) and then there's poorly made garbage like this disaster. The original ID4 is "so bad it's good" type of movie, at least to some people. But this sequel is "so bad it's unwatchable" for most - including me. Watching this movie felt like a chore. Not enjoyable because it was so stupid and poorly written.

reply

Well you just prove my point...

I really don't want to get in a troll fight or anything. My point is only: what is your expectations? Why do you watch this movie? I know why... and i know my expectations. And they were fulfilled ;)

You can make movies for various reasons. And movies like these are for mindless entertainment and to show of how far we have gotten in special effects etc... and i love it.. som people hate it.. fine, then watch something else.. It is pretty simple really.

I like all sorts of movies, but i also know what to expect. I don't go into movies like Independence Day and the like expecting great story, great characters or anything like that. You would be stupid to that..!? Or not knowing anything about movies.

There is a place and time for everything.

reply

I went in expecting garbage and it met my expectations completely. So I'm not complaining like I was disappointed or anything. It was just as bad as I thought it would be.

But my point is there are such things a "mindless entertainment" that works, but this movie wasn't one of them to me (and to most people). It's great you enjoyed it. I'm honestly glad you did, but you can't come on a message board and claim people who saw this film are "wrong" to say they hated it. If I go to a fast food restaurant and order a cheap burger it can still be good or bad despite being a cheap burger. Same with any movie. That's all.

Simple question: Why does the 1996 version feels much more suspenseful and intense? Why? This one didn't even offer any action that makes you awe. No suspense whatsoever, very weak camera work, *beep* CGI implementation which made the big ship look small, even though it was meant to be a beast. Remember the immersive effect in the first movie when they entered the mothership? It felt gigantic on screen.

And see, i didn't decipher anything other than pure action here. This POS just didn't deliver.

Emmerich needs to take a break. Think through his visions, and come back with a bit more clear head.

Edge of Tomorrow was so bad compared to this

v,v

Trust no one.

reply

100% agreed. Utter garbage.

reply

Good point. I actually really enjoy this movie for what it is...a light hearted sci-fi action adventure pic.

reply

For me, it was about seeing the characters again, finding out what happened to them and what happened to the planet/aliens/technology.

I knew that beyond these things we would get more of the over-the-top action and effects, and these things always have to try and do one better on everything else released to that point, so it can get pretty ridiculous.

reply

Wow what a ridiculous set of extremes you have.

So Sci-Fi entertainment = switch your brain off.. what so I have to act like a retard so I don't let my logic disturb me?

And if I want some logic, I have to watch some kind of art-style french movie decades old?

I think you are exactly the kind of person for this movie, someone that just doesn't really give a *beep* and wonders why anyone else would. Keep living life with your head in the sand and rolling eyes at people who don't share your attitude.

reply

That's crap. I love light hearted sci-fi adventures but this one sucked. Nobody expected this to be Schindler's List but it could have been done much better like Star Wars, Star Trek, Starship Troopers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Galaxy Quest, or oh I don't know... the original Independence Day?

reply

Much better than ORIGINAL FILMS?? So....how are those prequel Star Wars films viewed? How is Episode 7 viewed on IMDB? Ever check out the message boards? And What about those sequels to Starship Troopers, huh?? Straight to DVD garbage?? You list a bunch of original films and compare them to a SEQUEL to an original film? That just proves what your standards were/are and how impossible it was/is for ID2 to MEET your expectations.

Is this film better than Starship Troopers 2, Transformers 2, Star Trek 2, Episode 7?? For me, 110 percent YES! I really love the prequels to Star Wars, so I can't go there, and we shall see what comes of Guardians 2, but come on, compare apples to apples! I'm sick of seeing everything compared to the originals. There is literally only a handful of flicks in history that are BETTER than the original so that argument is flawed beyond belief!

Who's strangling the cat?

reply

You can defend this movie all you want. It's just horrible. Even with your brain turned off, it does not entertain, nor does it make you laugh. The movie is beyond corny and is boring beyond belief.

reply

Lol... i don't see how it is any better that you keep saying "this is crap" as if that statement is the ultimate truth. I agree to disagree and i watch all types of movies. Also the ones everyone loves.

If i sounded like my statement was the true truth i take that back. Naturally people are allowed to hate this movie as much as i like it. But it is just the reasons i don't get

All a matter of taste in the end. The first ID movie was recieved with very average reviews. This day it is somewhat a classic :-p And it is exactly as silly as those types of movies always are. With one-liners, crazy action, monument destruction and the presidents unifiyng speech.

All in all good fun. And yes i don't mind switching off my brain and not ask questions when watching this. Doesn't mean i don't switch it on when i expect something else.

I agree this isn't big art, but it is entertaining imo.

Such a fatuous idea, to think that a movie that sets out to be pure entertainment can't also be cleverly written or have some intelligent ideas. You're arguing for entertainment to be dumbed down, when that's perhaps the major flaw in American popular culture.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Millennials who hate that America is the leader in the movie are the biggest issue. Second only to Millennials not understanding Sci-Fi camp, and "fun" action. This was something like a Michael Bay movie done with a real sense of humor. I would bet you a thousand bucks that those who hated this movie are overwhelmingly in the under 30 crowd, who are too young to have seen the original in theaters, or remember a time when "America kicked butt."

Sick of this lazy analysis of action movies. A movie can be fun/silly and still have a sound and well-written plot and character development. "Switching my brain off" isn't an option, regardless of genre.
