They don't say but I assume she dies, probably of a heart attack or cancer or something to that effect. The way he reacts when he sees her after he is his younger self indicates that in his present, she is no longer around. It would have been nice if there was just a line or two of dialogue to explain it.
shareI haven't seen the movie in a while but I sort of convinced myself that she killed herself in a car with carbon monoxide. Wasn't there a scene with him looking at a rusty car on the property somewhere? I seem to remember him giving it a thoughtful glance.
shareYeah, that was her car, or at least looked like her car. While I can see why you would think that, it just doesn't seem like something her character would do, you know.

I too saw Murphy's thoughtful glance at the remains of his mother's car. However, I did not make any connection to her death let alone a death by suicide. Actually, there wasn't any mention of how she died. The only remark I can recall about his mother had to do with him losing the money she left him.
It would have been nice to tie up any loose ends to her life after the big game but there wasn't any mention of other characters lives after the "dream sequence". We only know about all the characters, beside Murphy and Macy, before the "dream sequence".
