Maybe he couldn't afford follow-up surgeries and that's what he was stuck with. Perhaps his initial surgery was botched. My father had a knee injury 25 years ago, tore the cartilage in his knee. Instead of repairing it they removed the cartilage. He walked with a limp and a brace, not the road warrior type of brace, but it was serious. He had to have a full knee replacement not too long ago...and that was after years of pain until the docs said it was his only option. Insurance didnt want to pay because he was "too young" for a knee replacement, meaning he'd probably outlive the replacement knee and have to have another one down the road.
