Saw a screening last night in Malibu.. fantastic and adeptly made film.

I was invited by a friend to attend a screening of Hector and the Search for Happiness last night. For background, I went in not having read the novel or being familiar with the work of director Peter Chelsom. I left awe struck at the film that unfolded before my eyes. Having the assumption that this was a feel good/finding yourself kind of movie, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't at all formulaic and didn't use any cheap conventions to tug at your heart strings or feel uplifting.

What surprised me most was the quality of film making that took place. The acting, writing, soundtrack, editing, cinematography, etc. all of it was incredibly well presented. Simon Pegg and cast could not have done a better job. I don't think there's any question Pegg will receive deserved praise and accolades for his performance. Having seen all his work in the comedy and action films he's done over the last decade, it's evident in this film that he's an incredibly gifted actor. No one on the supporting cast phoned in their roles either, it was evident Chelsom got them to fully buy into his vision.. and rightfully so. The soundtrack/score blew me away and was used in such a way that it could not have complimented the story better. Same for the editing and cinematography. Just really top notch stuff all around.

It's the kind of film that stuck with me throughout the night, next morning, etc. and made me have the desire to write such a glowing review. I can't recommend it enough. Films that have such a potent message as this and are so well made are few and far between. I'm not sure when it comes out in theaters but don't miss it.

Phew! Thank God there's no cliches..
So they DON'T go searching the World for Happiness, only to find it back home where they'd missed seeing it all the time...

I agree with everything you said. I didn't have any expectations and was blown away, loved it! I don't understand how this movie has such a low rating here.

I saw it tonight LOVED it. It is funny, sad, charming, insightful and so well acted. Simon Pegg is amazing, he should get nominated. Rosamund Pike so lovely, Toni Collette great and Christopher Plummer, another worthy Oscar performance,

It was a unique film that brings up so many different sides to happiness. Go see it!!

I'd say its rating isn't bad for its genre (guessing its a "dramedy", not having seen it yet). What I'm more surprised about is it opened (limited, but still) 6 days ago and there's not more posts about it yet. People afraid to praise it for fear of being shot down by the cynical, snarky elitist set perhaps? Those that see movies like this as weak, quirky, or pretentious? Don't worry, I'm not one of them. Love this genre and really relate to it. So nice to have films about real life and relateable characters (yes, real people have quirks and flaws...its called having a personality and being human) as a counterbalance to the blockbusters. Not that I'm anti-Blockbuster, but only liking more "typical" Hollywood movies seems just as pretentious as only liking indies IMO.

Also I'm a Simon Pegg fan due to his Cornetto Trilogy, so you'd think there'd be more Pegg fans interested in at least checking it out on imdb, too.

Anyway, rant aside, you guys that have seen it are lucky. I wish it was playing closer to me. I was all happy that it was coming out my birthday weekend, since my local theatre had a big poster advertising for it, so even though I knew it was an indie, I hoped we'd get it. But I live in the suburbs, so I guess I should have known it'd be a crapshoot. But hopefully soon there will be other ways to see it rather than having to wait for DVD (or spend tons of gas money driving to the city, plus cities kinda freak me out lol), as that will probably be months.

But yeah, hoping to see it soon and hopefully I'll like it. Looks like a more indie version of Walter Mitty. I liked Walter Mitty, but also felt a bit uncomfortable with its anti-introvert and anti-dreamer messages (as if there aren't enough messages like that in the world as it is). IMO you don't need to travel the world to find happiness (give me an internet connection, the simple life, a few people that "get" me and love me for who I am, even just one, and I'm happy as a clam lol), but if Hector comes to that conclusion, good for him. So maybe Hector will have the same message as Walter Mitty, but I can still enjoy movies I don't agree with 100%, so I'd still like to see it and decide how I feel about it for myself :-)

Forgot to say (wrote a novel and still forgot to say something...I know, right? lol), but I've also seen a commercial for this movie on TV recently. So...commercials on mainstream TV stations in America, trailers at mainstream movie theatres, big posters at those same theatres, a bankable star in Simon Pegg...so where is it? Why is it hardly playing anywhere? Boggles my mind that a film that's so seemingly high profile is showing in so few theatres. Hope it opens bigger soon or at least comes to VOD soon. I'll say it again, you all are lucky that have already seen it (either because its playing near you, you have connections or you're in the industry so you get to go to film festivals, etc).

I took a while to get going. It seemed like a lot of scenes and ideas that missed the mark and just didn't work. But an hour into it, by the time it got to Africa and beyond, the movie found it's mark and then fell apart by the time they got to brain scan scene with Plummer. Not sure what they were trying to say. I'm guessing the book was a lot better.

Loved this film. My friends loved this film. The audience loves this film. Not sure what happened with the critics.

Went to see this movie based on good reviews/word of mouth, and it was quite good.
A solid film from beginning to end.

Absolutely loved it. love love the film. I never read reviews or know what the film is about so I come in completely blind. The only reason I really saw this was it was recommended to me and also my daughter studied positive psychology and happiness was one of areas of study. Thought it would be interesting to check out and it was wonderful. Rated it a 9 😀
