i don't really get it. what's unresolved between them? it seems like it's just an old love story that ended and that's it.

It never ended for him. He was still in love with her (or the idea of her) and clearly felt some shame about that because he kept the photo hidden and apparently never mentioned Agnes to Clara despite her being "one of [his] oldest friends." She also said she loved him once, but we can assume she accepted that he was emotionally-stunted, so she made a life with someone else.

You know, movies love that "you don't love me, you love the idea of me" crap, well to extent it's like that for most people. But it's used as a cutesy way to just absolve the fact that he was in love with his ex (sorry, idea of his ex lol) until the moment she told him to *beep* off. But that's cool, cause now he understands she was just an idea so he can finally settle with Clare and they'll be happy ever after. What a load of crap.
