Are they downplaying The Hulk's strength?

Other than The Sentry and followed close behind by Thor, The Hulk is the strongest (Earth based) hero, yet they're treating him like the normal "heavy" of the group, especially so far this season. One punch from Doom took him out, they made it look like him and The Thing were close to being evenly matched, and Ms. Marvel took out someone who was beating him. I understand the last episode belonged to Ms. Marvel so it makes sense that she would beat the main bad guy, but maybe they shouldn't have had Hulk in the episode at all then. I'd like to see the strongest guy in the group get a few more badass moments... I think Hawkeye has had more than him and saved the day more.

Well Hulk's strength is always tied to his anger, so his power level is going to vary. I thought they did a good job of showing his power in the fight with Gravitron. Also he broke Kang's force field and smashed Ultron, who didn't want to mess with him at all after that so he turned him back into Banner.

But you can't make him too powerful or the episodes won't go anywhere, it will be just Hulk Smash, The End.

I don't think they downplayed it at all in the first season. This current season, they might be downplaying it a bit. But definitely not in the first season. Plus, as biggamemn said, it's tied to his anger. And this is definitely a more controlled Hulk, and more in control = less angry = less strong.

I admit, I'd like to see him be stronger in the recent episodes, but eh. They were probably downplaying him in this last episode to show that Ms. Marvel can kick ass, which I don't have a problem with. We need more kickass women in superhero film and television. Dr. Doom wiped the floor with Avengers and F4. They might just want to convey how much a badass Dr. Doom is the way they did for Ms. Marvel. They might be doing with Hulk in this current season what they did with Superman in the first season of Justice League, which is show him getting his ass kicked to let audiences know just how big a threat their foe is. Maybe people complained Hulk was too powerful in the first season.

I thought he was fine in the first season. I felt the need to bring this thread back since Ms. Marvel just freaking overpowered him lol. I like her, but her using brute strength to throw back the Hulk and for him to stay down for a little while is crazy.

I just watched that just now and thought no way...I mean I understand they seem to love Ms Marvel and all but she isnt THAT powerful.

I don't think that Hulk wanted to really hurt her, because if he did he could have. He also didn't seem particularily riled up either, and the Hulk's strength when he's calm and when he's riled are very different. The scene didn't really bother me for these reasons, not to mention the fact that I'm not a Hulk fan so I don't really mind if his strength is downplayed.

I think they do downplay the Hulk's strenth in this series a bit, but the guy they really seem to downplay is Thor. Isn't he supposed to be a God? At least a demi-god? He seems to get put to the mat far too often and far too easily. The only really awesome thing I saw him do was to absorb and reflect Kang's blast. But then of course he was in a coma for the rest of the fight after that one. Pathetic.

Thor almost never unleashes his true power, I think he's worried about the damage it could cause. I did like when he came back in season 1 and saved Black Panther and Hawkeye by destroying all the Iron Man armor pretty easily.

Thor is an alien, not a literal god as in being all powerful, immortal, etc.

Happens all the time in the comics. Unfortunately as others have mentioned the most common way to portray a villain as a credible threat is to have them punk one of the top tier bricks of which Thor and Hulk are as top tier as it gets. Normally Thor and Hulk exact some level of payback at some point during the comic book arc, sadly they probably won't get the same chance in A:EMH cause Leob is a stupid ass and is gonna cancel the show before that can happen.

reply

Even if the cancellation rumors are true, all the ones I read said that the show would still air all of its season 2 episodes.

After watching how successful Avengers movie was with their Hulk formula, they really need to let Big Green cut loose more often.

I think a large part of it is Thor is absent. In the first season the tendency was for Thor to get his butt kicked. I think he spent about half or more of each episode either tied up, knocked out, or somehow incapacitated only for Hulk to show up at the last moment and save the day. The ones written by Yost tended to be the worst and Thor has a few moments to shine here or there, but mainly Thor was the fall guy to establish the threat. Seriously, he spends just about all of the last two episodes tied up, is tied up repeatedly by the Enchantress, and is nearly defeated by Baron Zemo in both direct combat and by Zemo's laser pistol.

In the second season with Thor gone they made Hulk the fall guy.
