White screen?

So I only saw this movie on DVD, and everytime there was some gory violence, the screen goes to white and picks up a few seconds later. In one shot, only HALF the screen went white, while the hero was shown on the other half. Was this the way it was shown in theatres? It seemed really lame, and was wondering if maybe they just censored it for the home viewing audience. Anyone see it in a theatre and can shed some light on this?

No.. After the release film got negative reviews both from critics as well as audience so in order to cater to the audiences the gore part was censored. Those scenes were abruptly chopped off & only in the dvd's you get to see that white screen. Fearing huge loss & also missing out on family audience due to extreme gore, this measure was taken by the producers.
