Both.

may as well blame obama, he gets blamed for everything else.

reply

That's ridiculous.
Let's blame George Dubya like most people still do.

Don't have a lot of time to plan these things? What would make them pick JF and AH to host? I wonder if they have the same writers every year. Did they really think it would be a good show?

I just don't get how they came up with James Franco and Anne Hathaway. That's like coming up with Miley Cyrus and Jarod from the Subway Commercials.

yeah i thought it was because they are high up and comers....i mean why did hugh jackman host it that year because he was doing a lot of films at that time (not that he isnt now but his wolverineness was taking off)....hugh jackman did a much better job. again i sawy hathaway didnt do too bad she should have been paired with a vetran...though..i dont know who.

but yeah i blame the writing and the hosts themselves for the letdown. But it is the media who tells us what to think and the media was all souped up about this pairing and they probably will still hail it as a success so it will always be seen as one even though it totally flopped.

no one could have done any better considering the poor calibre of writing.

reply

Both.

I think talent like Billy Crystal and/or Jim Carrey are just brilliant and have enough clout to read the scripted mess and tell the writers what does and doesn't work. They are also both masters of the ad-lib.

I think with actors like Hathaway and Franco, they are just going to read what is put in front of them and try not to *beep* it up too bad.

In terms of talent... these two tonight are no where near the level that Crystal and Carrey are and it's beyond obvious to everyone but the ding-a-lings who chose tonight's hosts.

I mainly blame the writers. Actors 'act' from the script they are given. I agree with the above posters that a comic like Billy Crystal can either ad-lib or be in on the creative process and thus be more invested in the writing. I think Jim Carrey might be a little too 'silly' to host. An Academy Awards host needs the right mixture or reverence for the historical, formal aspect of the event and revelry to keep the audience entertained. Cut the stilted, forced host banter too. Anne Hathaway and James Franco's commercials for the broadcast were more entertaining than their show performance.

What disaster?
Do you have any idea how hard it is to put a show like this together?
You couldnt even spell DISASTER correctly in your subject line!

reply

aw. u are right. i guess i should correct it, huh?

The writing wasn't great. Anne and James I think were a bad pair together, no chemistry. But I don't think it was all James' fault or all Anne's (I've seen both in threads on their individual pages). I think they were just lousy together.

But either way, I wasn't nearly as disappointed as everyone else seems to be. There was nothing outrageously special about it (except for Kirk Douglas, that was awesome), but it didn't ruin my week or anything. Haha.

I don't think it was the worst, but it was unnecessarily long. That's why it was boring. Everybody was trying to hard and they went off on too many tangents.

I blame the producers, the writers, and the director. Franco and Hathaway are actors, not host or comedians. They took the gig and did the best they could. The people that put on the show are responsible for casting the hosts. They shoulda've chosen someone with experience at hosting, announcing or emceeing a show. That's why comedians have done the best in the past.

They also couldn't decide whther they wanted to be referential or irreverant. You can't have both. If you're going to have a serious a salute to the Academy's past and a serious tribute to the dead, you can't have Anne Hathaway mugging and Franco in drag. If there's nothing funny for them to say, just let them announce and get on with the show. Don't let Gwenyth Paltrow sing (mumble).

If they just announced the winners, did the dead star tribute, give the Thalberg award, just play the nominated songs while showing clips from the films like they do the soundtrack, and salute the past in one segment, they could probably wrap up the show in about two hours.

They need to stop trying so hard.

The only reason they went with Franco and Hathaway because they were trying to attract the younger crowd. Their ratings fell however I think most did not want watch them due to the avatar loss. A lot of people were upset that AVATAR lost to the hurt locker.
