The Palin family and pretty much every other hunter out there eat what they kill. Hunting is responsible and helps keep game numbers in line.

I AM a hunter, and I AM an Alaskan. (And for the record, I am rather strongly anti-Palin) Every single Alaskan hunter I've met has been in the hunting for the Meat, and not the Trophies. I'd venture that there is a lower % of trophy hunters in alaska than just about any other state.

That said, I also work in the Hospitality industry up here, and have played host to numerous Trophy hunters come up from the lower 48. Mostly bear hunters.

I strongly disagree with trophy hunting as both Anachronistic and wasteful.

On the topic of population controls, here are the FACTS. (Feel free to look 'em up and double check what I'm typing. I know the research I've done, but you all don't know me from Adam.) Typical populations everywhere in the world have balances between herbivores and predators. Easy enough. Most places, these days, humans are the primary predator. If humans have eliminated all the other predators in a region, and then stop controlling the population of herbivores, disease and starvation will do it for them. Thus, if you live in a region where there are few to no natural predators, people have to cull the herds to keep disease and starvation at bay. (And some of the diseases CAN be passed to man, so it actually does matter.)

Now in modern alaska there is a perversion of the system. There is a HUGE predator cull constantly in alaska in order to increase the size of the herds for the hunters in state. The problem here is that Humans and natural predators hunt in different ways. Wolves take the weakest animals, be they sick, injured, old, or young and unprotected. Humans tend to take the strongest animals. So while natural predators select for the strongest in a population, humans tend to select mediocrity in animals.

Every year it comes up, I vote against the predator cull, but sadly I am in the minority.

Btw, Moose, caribou, and mountain goat are taystee.

I have too. Much of my family hunts and it does indeed help take care of animal numbers-- especially in our area. Now, I'm not a hunter, but work with a great many of them and have them in my family. This theory is indeed true. Granted, it's not always the case-- that I will relent to. Some just hunt for the sake of hunting and I don't like this. The deer, coyote, and wild hog populations are exploding and several counties in my area have to hire hunters to take care of the problem. In the mountains and in large wilderness areas, population management aren't near as big a deal. I believe the larger problem with population is the direct result of over-hunting of natural predators and building where we should not. I am thinking about taking up squirrel and wild hog hunting next year and don't plan on taking on deer or large game.

I don't hunt but most of my family does. I don't think that hunting for sport and hunting for usage of the animals are mutually exclusive. My family doesn't NEED to hunt - we could and do easily buy meat at the store. And yes my brother has a picture of him holding up the head of the first deer he shot and my parents do have a deer head mounted on their wall. BUT that doesn't mean that we are cruel to the animals (always kill them as quickly as possible, if you injure an animal you go find it and kill it rather than let it suffer and die slowly, etc) and we do use the meat from the animals we kill. It stocks our freezer and provides for our family.

I live in NC and most of the hunters here are for the tropy, they say they eat it and love the meat but then throw most of it out or try to give it away and no one wants it. They throw the carcass and guts on the side of the hiway after they have cut the head off for trophy and taken the prime cuts. Its such a beautiful site to see this time of the year on the side of the road all the carcuses. The hunters run around hunting season with reckless regard calling themselves hunters as they stand in the back of their pickup on the side of the hiway aiming their gun at deer in a field. I once was driving down a hiway and saw a guy on the side of the road following a deer in his gun site. The deer was running toward the hiway and he kept firing and shot toward the cars on the road as the deer was crossing. A cop happened to be traveling behind us and turned around and confronted him, come to find out the guy was drunk hunting and most of them usually are and dont know the slightest thing about gun safety. They bait the animals for months before hunting season with sweet corn in an area. Then when the animals are comfortable coming to that location to eat with the rest of the pack they open fire while sitting in a nice comfy stand or heated shelter. This is by no means hunting. If the deer is wounded they just let their dogs chase it down to its death. Oh and the dogs all have radio collars on so that makes it easier too right?? More like shooting fish in a barrel.
No Im not a vegetarian or animal rights whacko. Just that this is not hunting, its out of control lunatics running around shooting on the hiway, and around neighborhoods with hi powered rifles were the bullet can travel miles into a home or car. They look like aholes and out of control idiots, they are not hunters or manly they are sissys baiting and shooting.
Killing creatures for sport or fun, then beheading, gutting and sawing their body up has all the makings of a serial killer.

I think hunting can easily affect numbers by making them dwindle, but from what I've read, overpopulation has rarely been a problem (where I live).

I live smack in the middle of elk country and the herds are blatantly smaller than they were 11, 12 years ago. It's really frustrating. But I eat elk, so what can I say [] .

I'm still a skeptic about whatever hunters say in general; it's too easy to say they help keep the population in check. Nature keeps populations in check. But I haven't look at numbers or read/heard any arguments for it either way in a few years.

Like I said, I'm not anti-hunting, I just sort of roll my eyes at that one "reason" for the ethics of hunting. I, too, though am entirely against hunting for the sport and not for the respect and usage of the animals.

Some hunters are indeed wankers, mate. However, most are respectful and their purchasing tags and licences afford a larger budget for conservation. Some of the most ardent conservationists are hunters. Now, there are a few "hunters" that despise:

1) Hunters that are filthy rich and take "safari's" or pay others to shoot and kill big game all over the world-- including domestic. That's not cool in my book.

2) Poachers. Don't let me find one around me b/c their tires will be slashed and they WILL be turned in. Poachers, not hunters, are at fault for dwindling numbers of otherwise common species.

3) Hunters who do not respect the life of the animal they just harvested. That animal died for you so you darn well better use as much of it as possible. My family hunts for fun, sure, however, they can't afford to go out and purchase the same amount of meat at a grocer. You can get meat for a year for under 150 bucks or you can pay hundreds and hundreds for the same weight of lesser-quality, hormone injected meat.

4) Hunters with a bad shot. If you're a bad shot don't take it out on the animal. Practice at a range or on private property until you can make a clean kill at distance. Otherwise, time to start a close-in stalk. Don't make a bad shot and allow the game to suffer. One shot, one kill.

Okay, I'm off my soap box now. Hunting has always been and hopefully will always be a part of life. It's up to us to ensure the survival of species that provide food, warmth, shelter, tools, and survival. Unfortunately, natural predators have been hunted to near extinction in many parts of the United States and abroad so it makes legal and closely monitored hunting more important. "Progression" or, rather, infringement on land that once belonged to roaming herds and Native Americans have also caused upsets in balances and now, more than ever, conservation and monitoring is key.

Certainly it's not the case everywhere and with every species; but in my area we have had a population explosion of deer in the last several years. Some hunters will give their animals to "Hunters for the Hungry". Local butchers will clean and dress the animal and the meat goes where it's needed.

I hate all this crap about keeping animal populations in check. Last time I checked, the world has been overpopulated for a long time. By that, I mean the Earth cannot sustain the way of living of many people on this planet. You've got idiots like that Duggar family having 19 kids, and you're telling me people hunt because some animal populations are too large? I just hate that argument. Let me just grab a gun and take care of some people in this world, because frankly, there ARE too many humans on this planet. Just look at the environmental destruction.

Now there's an idea I like mostwanted !!!

I've noticed that at the end of Movies, in the credits, is a statement from the ASPCA that states something like "No animals were injured in the making of this Movie".

Do they run a disclaimer before this gem that, "the following may contain material that some viewers might find offensive" ? If not, maybe they should.
After all there are people out there that are offended by this, or don't want their children seeing it.

If you're not a "Hunter", you definitely are not going to watch the OUTDOOR CHANNEL- here you have TLC, you tune in to see some Alaskan Scenery but who knows what you're going to see- some goof clubbing a baby Seal or a family out on a fun outing shooting wolves from a Helicopter.

While I agree the Earth is overpopulated with humans, to not see the effect this has on wildlife and that this can and does lead to the need to manage wild life populations is obtuse.

As for reducing the numbers of humans? Feel free to start by removing yourself. Just an idea.

You see the natural Predators have been killed off to keep Parks safe for wimps like you. Now personally We would gladly reintroduce them. Maybe Tigers, after all the Asians and Indians are killing them off as fast as possible!

Agreed Storm- I find the show offensive because of her "hunting and fishing" and therefore don't watch it- and is also the main reason I didn't vote for McClain.

I find the commercials offensive also- and switch channels whenever they come on.

Do not expand the playing field to justify your point of view- the show is an OUTDOOR CHANNEL reject- I don't like hunting and fishing shows- I don't watch hunting and fishing shows- therefore IMO Sarah Palin's Alaska is a piece of crap TV show.

If Sarah and her father had decided to leave the meat behind, then I'd agree with you. But given the fact that they actually retrieved as much meat as possible and they planned on storing it so Sarah and her family would have something to eat, I don't have an issue with what they did. And thankfully, the animal didn't suffer.

I happen to know several people who hunt deer and elk, all for the sake of providing for their families. My father was one of those people. So obviously, I take issue with people who look down on people who hunt.

and to those who say its offensive... it doesn't offend everybody because some of us understand that it is a way of life. So find something else to worry about. Maybe like human trafficking or aids. Those are both pretty offensive to everyone I'd think...

land- Don't expand the playing field because you're losing- this discussion is not about Human trafficking or aids- it's about Hunting and about how some find it offensive and should not be shown on a family show under the guise of entertainment.

There are many more things about Alaska that they could show that don't involve the killing of animals- and do you really think the Palin family would starve to death if it wasn't for Sarah's hunting ?
