Question about the parents

I'm sure that this was probably obvious to other viewers but, the nature of the parents death wasn't completely clear to me. This isn't an aspect of the story that would make or break the quality of the film (in my opinion), I'm just being curious.

Did a cult murder the mom and dad or did they die by their own hand?
