John Landis does a lot of smacktalk in this

Super *beep* annoying. He rants about exploitation, he rants about Roger Corman being all about the money (Which, yeah of course Corman is but so what? John Landis isn't? He'd give his right arm to be a successful, working EXPLOITATION director these days, he's a has been. Give me a *beep* break.) he talks a lot of crap on a genre that you know he squealed about like a fapping fanboy back in the day and I find it disingenuous at best.

Also, chicks showing their tits in the jungle for Roger Corman never caused the deaths of three people. Just sayin'.

I wish QT's participation/thoughts/interviews had remained in the film, overall this is almost as enjoyable as Not Quite Hollywood, but someone so needed to tell John Landis to shut the *beep* up, IMO. His *beep* puts a damper on a lot of this.

Agreed. Watching it right now and he's a prick about this era. He owes his career to this *beep*

reply

That's what I found so odd about it. As you say, he does owe his career to these kinds of films, and for him to come across as so disagreeable was, for me, a big disappointment and took a lot away from my enjoyment of the film.

I concur. Landis comes across as an extremely pompous and obnoxious jerk in this film.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

He's surprisingly bitter and unpleasant.

Maybe they got him on a bad day? It strikes me that he never accepted any responsibility or culpability for what happened when he was shooting TZ, maybe that hangs heavy on his conscience or something as he gets older, who knows. I just didn't like him or the way he presented himself in this film and a little Landis would have gone a long way.

He is annoying in these documentaries but I have to agree with his calling BS on exploitation directors who claim their films had some lofty meaning.

Also, people did die making these films; it is mentioned in the doc.

As for Tarantino - the Weinsteins specifically prohibited any use of QT's likeness or voice in this film. Hartley addresses this in the DVD commentary, as well as having nothing but good things to say about Landis. I'm surprised at the negative reaction that some people have, because Landis came across as the same enthusiastic and forthright personality that I've seen in many film docos. If you hear the commentaries for his first two movies you'll find that he's the first to knock himself down.

reply

He's joking. He just has a humor where it comes off as him being serious and bitter. If you watch Trailers From Hell (created by Joe Dante) he does this all the time, along with goofy humor like pretending to be a different director each time he narrates. You can tell he loves these movies.

I've run into Landis at conventions. When he gets drunk, look out. He IS a bitter *beep*

Of course co-workers aren't going to speak ill of him.

That doesn't mean he isn't an *beep* when he feels like it, which is a good percentage of the time. Dude is bitter and has not made a decent movie in many, many years.

reply

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with people still calling him a murderer

He is just honest.
