It's a movie. That means the dog wasn't really hurt and they clearly put in the credits no animals were harmed.

The movie dealt with a lot of other unpleasant topics, it doesn't mean the people involved get pleasure out of things like animal abuse, assault, or self-harm.

It was tough to see that! I like that she stood up for the dog. That showed some humanity to her character.
