I quite liked this.

So much better than the recent Alice in Wonderland update. Also much better than Wicked as a backstory explanation for Theodora's wickedness, and the Wizard. I haven't read Baum's books but I'm assuming there there's a fair departure from source material. Nevertheless it has me curious to check them out. I think it's a fine children's tale that allows them to also see how events can impact people and lead them to do good or evil things. As a moral story it surpasses The Wizard of Oz, and it is full of whimsy and fun. Not a great movie but certainly a very good one imo.

I agree. It wasn't an amazing film by any stretch of the imagination but it was entertaining and a good Christmas film which provides a reasonably satisfying background to the wizard of oz. I wondered whether the lion the wizard scares off at the start of the film becomes the cowardly lion and then there's Michelle Williams character marrying Mr Gale at the start of the film and I guess becoming Dorothy's parents, I liked those little tie-ins.

Yes, I wondered that too, and whether the scarecrow is one of the soldiers from the battle of the poppy field.

I liked it a lot more than I was expecting to. Based on the reviews, I wasn't expecting much, but I thought it was great.

I'm watching this movie while I'm working. This was one of those films I play in the background without giving my full attention. However, I was surprised how much I am enjoying it.

I was also thinking about the comparison with Alice in Wonderland and I thought that "Oz: the Great and powerful" was a much better movie and I can't believe it has a lower rating than AIW... Although I can't say I am very much surprised...

reply

I enjoyed it as well. Thought it was a fun movie.

I'd heard awful things about it but I was pleasantly surprised. You can tell that the director cared about a good story and about reimagining the world from L Frank Baum's books. Probably could have used a different lead actor but I think most of the rest of the cast did good jobs

I'm gonna die of long hair!

I agree that the cast was pretty good.

Much better than I was expecting. I was entertained. And yes, I liked it much more than Alice in Wonderland. I was ready for that to end about half way through it.

I'm hoping for a sequel. I think that says a lot as far as how much I liked it.

I don't think it surpasses the Wizard of Oz but I think both movies are really good in their own way. I didn't think I would like this because of my love for the Judy Garland movie but I was surprised that I liked it.

me too, went in with low expectations and ended up having a good time, even laughed a couple of times too
