(This doesn't mean someone is racist). I sort of see what you mean. She's only good in certain types of films. In Baby Boy she was perfect, but in this movie, I'm not sure I bought what she was selling. I think Kerry Washington would have played 'Lauren' better.

Kerry Washington would have been a stretch. She's a capable actress, but the role called for someone that was cynical and somewhat bitter about love, and finding love. I can't picture Kerry in that role. I think Taraji did a good job.
shareThat's why it's only acting, genius. It shouldn't matter what an actor's real personality is like. If Kerry's even a half-way decent actress, she should be able to play a cynic. It's what (good) actors do. They act.

While that may be true (as far as actors' ability), I feel that Taraji has more range than Kerry. So I guess, by your standards, Taraji is the more skilled actor.

I disagree. Kerry has played a range of characters, from an African wife to a Southern bell, and has been able to transform herself in each role. Taraji's range is limited. Her persona in Baby Boy was the same persona she had in Talk to Me, and even more so in Not Easily Broken. I wouldn't call her a 'horrible' actress, but her range is very limited compared to Kerry Washington's.

After watching her in Scandal, recalling her role in Last King of Scotland, watching her play a Blacktina, and impatiently waiting for her performance in Django, I am completely agree that she is awesome! She can get a little bitchy as Olivia Pope, but she would need a little more to really flesh out the role like Taragi did.
shareI agree. I love Kerry but I couldn't see her doing this role like Taraji. I think Taraji was great here. She does snark well. They are both wonderful, they just have different strengths. Taraji went from Baby Boy to Benjamin Button to TLAM. Three different characters types and I believe she played them all well. Now I couldn't see Taraji being an African anything but I think it's a disservice to her talent to say she has limited range as if she's never played varied roles before.

I think she's a good actress, think about this though. When Jim Carrey started doing those dramatic movies it didn't go over too well with general audiences because he's the 'funny guy'. That's just like if Denzel Washington started doing straight comedy movies, it wouldn't feel right. So with Taraji she's doing the roles she's good at, then when she becomes a bigger star in Hollywood she can venture out into a variety of different roles.

I like Kerry, but she's kinda dry in comedies. Taraji is a better fit for this kind of film in my opinion and her chemistry with Ealy was unreal.

Yea she was great in Hustle and Flow and I just found out that she was actually the one singing during that movie shes got a voice.
shareI think she was fine in this movie, but sometimes she also has a tendency to be overly animated, which can really hurt the performances.
Instead of feeling natural, it just feels way too 'put on'. But like I said, she was okay here.
