Completely Disappointing - Now wonder it was axed

I was recommended this show by a friend who was also a fan of the Shield. I thought "hey another Sean Ryan creation.. GROOVEY"

..boy was I wrong:

* Delroy Lindo is not believable as a corrupt politician. Ever seen the wire? Remember the Mayor in season 5? Remember police Chief Burrell? Delroy just doesnt sell. He's like a poor mans Samuel L Jackson. Maybe its his over acting, maybe its the accent and demeanor.. i dunno. I just didnt "despise" him... I just didnt care.

* Colvin as Police Chief.. sorry "SuperIntendent". Im supposed to believe this late 30's, nearly model quality, trendy chic is a tough as nails hard hitting top cop of CHICAGO PD??? REALLY??? Did no one see Glenn Close in Season 4 of the shield? She was believable. Just pretty enough to keep you interested but totally CLINCHED the role of a powerful female leader who was too tough on crime. Colvin is a goddamned Kelly Girl.

(incidentally who here DIDNT think she and Jarek were fock buddies??? Who are the writers trying to fool??)

* Jarek - Our pollack super cop. So once again I refer to legendary super cops of the past, Vic Mackie, Jim Mcnulty.. Axel Foley.. Believable, blue collar, smarter than they look get it done cops. Jarek is too polished.. He looks like an actor pretending to be a cop. His portrayal just didnt feel realistic

* Its only been the first episode but little niece Wysocki and her partner Isaac just didnt have any chemistry. I mean he didnt look at her with lust and she seemed too ditzy to be a street cop. Also it was hard to accept (age wise) that she was Jarek's little niece (look at the flashback then look at her now.. they could be brother and sister.. or lovers.... the paternal relationship just wasnt believable).

* The only character that had promise was Antonio and they KILLED HIM OFF EARLY??? WTF??

This may be niggling but the music score seemed dated to me. Just wasnt engrossing. The whole ambience of the show seemed really contrived and while the story line had potential (re: The Wire).. it just didnt seem to be executed very well.

I dunno. This is definitely not Ryans best work .. In my opinion when you do these law enforcement dramas you have to use the scale established by The Wire, The Shield and 24.. (Some will argue these are extreme examples but I beg to differ)... My point is, those shows set a very high bar in regards to storytelling, execution and character depth.

Sorry Chicago... Go Red Sox!

Meh.

I thought the show was good. Of the ones you listed as the go-to shows they all got more than 1 season to spread their wings. If TCC had gotten that it could have been on your list.

Mate... that is an idiotic statement. Do you really think The Shield, The Wire and 24 didnt also have a pilot and first season for which they were to be tested?

They get renewed based on the demographic sampling (used to be called Nielson Ratings) .. Chicago Code went through the SAME tried and true process.. and simply FAILED..

I am attributing that failure to the aforementioned points!

The shield got better and better as it went on. A decent first season that became a full on classic as it went on. This could of went the same way, you never know.

Your statement is stupid boy. When the shows you talk about were on the air were was the internet entertainment? Oh that's right there was none.

Don't give me this *beep* about ratings. They are not a indicator of 1. how good a show is, and 2. how loved the show is, because we have new technology that doesn't take that into account.

If you don't like the show fine, but we all know you have a small dick.

What Frumpy says - ratings mean nothing in terms of a show's quality. One episode of one of these talent shows gets more viewers than an entire season of The Wire ever did.

Jennifer Beals, who was 48 at the time this ran, is excellent in her understated and powerful portrayal of authority and determination. Delroy Lindo's Gibbons is fascinating and compelling.
