Question.

Why did Alfredo suddenly decide to attack his sister at the end? Was he just killing her to save her from the cops or what?

reply

My take on the whole "ritual" was that it was a superstitious act they had developed to bring the family luck, protection, prosperity, etc. When they were stuck in a jam, with police swarming the house and taking pot shots at them, and they'd not yet been able to perform the ritual since dad had died, the son panicked and starting chewing on the sister - presumably to break their run of bad luck.....
I need to re-watch it to understand better.

He did it to save her, by making the cops see her as a victim instead of one of the killers.

I agree, he did it to save her. When the cops saw that she was crying and had bite marks they assumed she was a victim, not a cannibal. Plus the mother kept saying 'someone has to survive!'

Would have thought that this became clear once you see that he had given her the note which said 'you are alive'. Why else would he give her that if he hadn't meant to save her?

reply

This wasn't clear to me, but I think this has got to be the correct interpretation.

ah. this makes so much sense now.
and julian didn't catch on to that. hence why he shot alfredo in reaction.

The fact that just merely biting her would make the police believe she was a victim and not one of the instigators was either a) a plot hole or b) indicative of sloppy police work. Give the police time to inspect the house and they would soon enough find her fingerprints all over the place, including the axe used to kill the policeman. At least you'd think she'd be under police custody at the hospital.

There were other things that didn't make logical sense. When the police hear there's something happening in the neighbourhood, they head straight there and seem to know exactly who they are looking for, despite not getting descriptions from the bloke who escaped. There's no indication either what guided them to the right house. Why would the one cop go in alone without calling for back up? Why, after shots are fired and the other cops start to get hit, did they carry on fighting their way into the house without any protective gear?

Personally I found the whole thing too obtuse with too many inconsistencies. Trying to kidnap street children in the middle of the day, driving up in your own car to pick up prostitutes for sacrifice without taking off the licence plates, stopping in the middle of the highway to lug a body into the boot, going back to the exact same street corner to drop off a prostitute's body so they can all get another good look at you, your car and your licence plate...not to mention there's no indication why exactly they were doing this in the first place.

I'll go with your answer since nothing else makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.
