I Loved It But I'm Confused By the Ending

I loved this movie, the way I loved Dogtooth. Both have screwed up bizarre families and sick family dynamics. In both movies, the children are amoral because their parents were. But not evil. But I don't get what happened in the end. I know it's alot but can someone break down for me what happened after Julian said that he wouldn't eat the one guy Alfredo captured? I also thought that the idea of eating people gives this family a sense of power. After all, they're really on top of the food chain.

Essentially, the mother was against eating a 'whore', even though she herself was one. Alfredo was gay and Julian refused to eat a gay man. Despite the implied fact that Julian was possibly engaged in incest with the sister, Sabina. After a struggle with the man the mother brought home which lead to his death, the mother asks where the gay guy Alfredo brought home went. Alfredo and Julian get in their car and start to search for the gay guy who is trying his best to run and hide and find help. He finds police officers and tells them that he is being chased and that 'they' wanted to eat him. The 2 '5th rate cops' who intend on solving the case themselves in order to gain respect head to the projects. During this time we see Sabina and her mother preparing the 'ritual'. Sabina opens up the dead man much like an autopsy. The low level cops arrive at the project with one of them going in, his partner asking him if he is going to just kill them all. The cop says he will. Alfredo and Julian arrive back at home and are walking to their home when they are stopped by the 1 cop that stayed back in the car. The other cop, hellbent on killing the cannibals is now in the apartment and finds the dead body. We see Sabina biting into the dead man's thigh briefly beforehand. The cop outside pulls his gun on the brothers and just then, the higher level cops arrive and see the cop with a gun. He yells that he's a police officer and the brothers see this as an opportunity to try and run. The cop with his gun on the brothers shoots at them and the other cops shoot him down as the brothers run off. They realize they just killed one of their own.

Inside the apartment, the mother gets into a fight with the cop inside and she and Sabina finish him off. The brothers arrive inside and tell the mother they must flee now. The mother insists they must finish the ritual so everything will be alright just as all the clocks in the house are going off. The brothers convince them they must run and Julian picks up the now dead cops gun. He shoots at the police that enter the apartment. The brothers, Sabina and the mother are now in 2 separate rooms across the way from each other. The mother is with Alfredo and tells him they must run now, that the cops will just shoot Julian and Sabina. That one must survive in order to complete/carry on the 'ritual'. Alfredo runs across the way to be with his brother and sister. The mother basically gives up and goes to the rooftop to run. The group of 'whores' that witnessed the kidnapping of one of their own and saw her dead body delivered to them see the Mother running across the rooftops and follow her. In the apartment, Alfredo suddenly lunges for Sabina and begins to bite into her face and wrist. Julian gets him off of her and shoots him in the head. The cops then shoot him dead. Sabina is crying very hard.

The mother is now in some playground sitting at the bottom of a slide. The group of 'whores' slowly walk up to and gather around her. Sabina is taken out of the apartment and only identified as a 'survivor'. As she's being loaded into the ambulance, she opens the slip of paper that Alfredo was given earlier. The 'You are alive!' note. We see scenes of the cops covering the dead bodies in the apartment, along with Julian who died on top of Alfredo. Then we see a short scene of the mother in daylight, lying dead on the ground, covered with blood. Cut to a hospital shot and Sabina sneaks outside, still in a hospital gown and walks to a busy corner where she catches the eye of one guy and she just stares past the camera with a bit of a smirk on her face.

Long reply but there you go.

I also think Alfredo attacked Sabina so she'd be identified as a survivor and not one of them, hence the note

Good catch! That is when he must have slipped the note in her hand.

Because one of them had to survive to complete the ritual. My only question is, what happens then?

You're probably confused by the ending because of the fact that "the ritual's" significance was never really explained, though frequently raised in general conversation. It ultimately led to the mother and the brothers eating their lunch so to speak, so that the daughter/sister could be disguised as a victim and likely go free.🐭
