I wouldn't say the message is to highlight what's wrong with racism, but with the idea of prejudice in general. Like the radio announcer says, we reject the unknown and try to keep within the familiar, but sometimes the most wonderful thing in the world can come from something completely different.
And on a side note, I'm an amateur animation-historian, and I have to say this is easily one of the greatest animated shorts I've ever seen; not only is the message great, but the mix of computer-animation with traditional style, not to mention the hilarious use of sound effects, makes this one of the greatest shorts Pixar has ever created. I could watch it 100x times.
