Annoying guy Johnny is more apt
Johnny is not only ridiculously nice, but also clueless and utterly annoying. In fact, as the movie wore on I began to believe that it wasn't so much Johnny's niceness that was his problem - it was the fact that he was basically, for all intents and purposes a dumb ass, for lack of better terminology.
First, we find out that Johnny has great virtue. So much so that he could be bordering on Sainthood - were he not so meek and unaware. The gorgeous, fun, vivacious, funny, intelligent and extremely sexy blonde tennis player is no match for them. Try as she might to show him that life is about much more than being subservient to a domineering woman and forfeiting his career goals and all hope of a happy future, he simply continues to be a clueless mope and trudge forward, all the while bitching and complaining about how unhappy he is. While he should be having an absolute epiphany and thanking his uncle for opening his eyes to what his life could be like if only he could successfully grow a pair of stones, this guy remains thoroughly stubborn, certain that his uncle is merely a scumbag womanizer with no insight, wisdom or inclination to further anyone's cause but his own. I'm a fan of Ed Burns as an actor, but this simply does not sound like a plausible premise to me.
On top of it all, he allows his fiance to verbally emasculate him for something that he did not do - and that she perfectly well knew he was not capable of...being the clueless puppet he was, and still tried to do everything he could to convince her and win back her love. Nice to a fault? Absolutely. But being nice was not the only fault in Johnny's repertoire. This could have been a much better film had the lead character not been such a thoroughly frustrating embarrassment to himself.
