Behind the façade of Jackie Kennedy: Aloof, calculating, hosted wild parties & left it to nanny to tell her kid's about

The public Jackie Kennedy was soft-spoken, elegant and had great charm and sophistication. But behind closed doors the iconic first lady was aloof and ruthless, and left it to the nanny to deliver the news to little Caroline and John that their father, the president, had been assassinated.

The Kennedys were not what they appeared to be, a new biography reveals.

'Their identities were carefully constructed idealizations that exemplified the highest qualities of American life, including personal qualities that neither the president nor the first lady always displayed when backstage at the White House', writes leading presidential historian and professor Michael J. Hogan in The Afterlife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy: A Biography.

Despite her charm and popularity with the American people, Jackie Kennedy struggled with the insecurity of her early family life, which left her closed off and reluctant to share her true self with others.

I wondered about that scene with the kids. The only part cut from the nanny's book on Jackie's orders was around 100 words about how the kids were told. Also that thing about keeping Patrick company in Heaven was something the nanny said in response to a question of John's, not something Jackie said to a question of Caroline's, though it would be nice to think she was repeating something Jackie actually said. Sweet scene, though, and the little girl playing Caroline was great.
