Music score

Granted I was in a bit of a dark mood when I saw this movie, but the score was far too dreary that for me it was a big distraction. The content of the assassination is dark and disturbing enough but to have music only exacerbate the mood made it off putting.

reply

Yes. For the first time while watching a film thought a lot of the music didn't help the movie, was inserted too much and seemed inappropriate at times.

reply

I agree 100%. I don't get the buzz around this score a little bit. It almost doesn't match the film. La La Land, Moonlight and Nocturnal Animals are the best scores of the year, IMO.

In my opinion, the score was brilliant. It's probably that people are used to more conventional "Hollywood" soundtracks. Mica Levi did a great job on Under Your Skin. Check it out:

I was surprised that her OST for Jackie was nominated for Oscars. I thought that nobody would care.
EDIT: sorry, "Under THE Skin"

reply

I'm not saying that the score wasn't brilliant or that Mica isn't talented, I'm just writing how the score (and how often the score was used) affected me negatively. I saw this movie in an old theatre, and when the movie started, I literally thought that the tape (yes, it's digital) was melting or something. Glad it worked for you, but man, it was so off putting for me. I was half expecting the characters faces to go all Devil's Advocate and twist and contort. Like someone else posted, I've never had a negative reaction to a music score before, thus the reason for posting.

Under The Skin score is so amazing. Jackie score is almost as great. I want ML do do film work forever.

reply

I loved the score aswell. this is the score that a movie needs to get the viewer trapped in the story... so you feel every second of the movie.

It did remind me a bit of "under the skin".

reply

whoever approved the score should never be allowed to ever work on a movie ever again ..... It was sadly out of place and forced .....smh just terrible

reply

I thought the score was very present, but not disturbing. It was rather emphasizing the mental unstability of the characters. An uneasy, disturbing harmony for a person in a uneasy, disturbed and unharmonious situation.
Rather fitting, I'd say.

reply

I would agree with that. I think Mica Levi was a perfect choice. I don't feel this movie is a grand, "Hollywood" tragedy - it is very zeroed-in and ultra-focused to the point of claustrophobia and the score supports that. In fact, the score is not so much a support as an integral part of the whole experience, as indispensable as any character. The film's mood is completely signaled and defined by that opening descending note and the sense of inescapable disorientation was maintained throughout. I think Levi is someone to watch (listen to).

reply

Not perfect or a good choice at all. It could've worked if it wasn't presented towards an alien movie.
A lighter tone or different sound could've been better. IT feels like you're watching a depressing movie that will only give you despression. I thought Jackie is suppose to recover from her loss, but not gain it? Who made that up? Why would you add such a painful expierence watching a movie?

jackie must've been annoying as a person, because I disliked every scene she was in crying or talking.

reply

There were several scenes where there was music when there should have been none.

reply

I thought the music was trying way too hard to convey the mood that it came off as a desperate directorial choice.

reply

The music & the use of it were brilliant.

It made the movie much more powerful & really dark.

This could have been easily a movie-of-the-week, but the intelligent screenplay,
acting, directing & scoring made it something else.

The whole movie felt like a stream of consciousness.

I want more experimental music like this in Hollywood features.

reply

The score was fine and appropriate but it was just too loud when contrasted with the dialogue.

"'Extremely High Voltage.' Well, I don't need safety gloves, because I'm Homer SimpsoMMMMMMMnnnnnzzzzz--" - Frank Grimes

I loved especially this.

The music felt like a character in the rooms, like death itself.

reply

I think the whole thing seemed too desperate NOT to be a movie-of-the-week that it undermined the material.

reply

But you need to give them credit for trying something new.

It's a different kind of bio pic.

It has staying power.

The music totally works.

Could win an Oscar.

reply

I disagree. The music was excellent.

reply

I agree with you, the music made the movie in my opinion

reply

The music score is basically the only thing i disliked about that movie.
